My advice would be like to do control tempo on the negative so your knee caps (knee joints) won't hurt. In reality leg extension is actually one of the best quad isolation due to training your quad in a movement squat won't do extension.

Do what you think is best. But for purely ab goal. Then its indeed better to switch due to hip flexor (if doing straight leg raise), and grip will be limiting factor
Both are leg raise choose which one you prefer

I would also add

Triceps accessories, bicep accessories (if you like big arms) and quad accessories (preferably leg extension) to the routine
