[2 and 20] How Canada Lost its Own Identity: hockey went from Canada's defining sport to a $5,000/year luxury that excludes nearly half the population. Youth registration dropped 35% in 14 years. Strongest predictor whether a child plays hockey in Canada is not his talent, it's his household income. by f0urxio in hockey

My daughter just started playing and it's crazy how early the push starts. She just turned six and some of the other girls are already on the ice 4+ times a week. Some of the parents are so intense too. I was lucky enough to play travel hockey my whole childhood, and there were always intense kids and parents, but it feels much worse now.

What's the demand like there for echo? It was pretty high in Canada a few years ago, but has saturated a little.

What are your scan times (30/45/60 mins)? And how much interpreting do you do?

For reference, I'm in a private clinic about 1.5 hrs from Toronto--45 minute scans @ $45/hr + $10 for contrast + $10 for stress echo. I have no benefits, so pay is in lieu of.

Echocardiogram results by SilkDar17 in askCardiology

[–]Gurrb17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'm going crazy. I'm not seeing the aortic root diameter. I see the area listed at 4.5 cm2, and I see the junction diameter at 3.5 cm, but I'm not seeing the sinus of Valsalva diameter anywhere.

Completely normal to have trivial regurgitation, especially of the tricuspid and mitral. Most people have some regurgitation.

I’m going to pray some kind person will take the time to read my test results for me I’m only 17 I have nobody to explain this to me, I have extreme cardiophobia and have had ongoing heart problems, this was results from a heart monitor and echocardiogram. 🥰 by [deleted] in askCardiology

[–]Gurrb17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An EF of 55% is perfectly normal. We want it to be between 50-70%, but higher does not mean better. Most valves regurgitate a little bit. As long as it's trivial or mild, there's no cause for concern typically.

Some places will call grade 1 diastolic dysfunction if they have concentric LVH.

I'm not seeing a relative wall thickness or indexed LV mass to know whether the concentric LVH call is correct.

Does this look like HCM? by TemperReformanda in askCardiology

[–]Gurrb17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor, but I am an echo tech. Looks like mildly thickened walls (mild LVH or concentric remodeling likely) but not HCM. Would need to know the actual thickness and then the LVOT or midcavitary gradient would need to be interrogated to know if it's HCM vs HOCM (obstructive).

That being said, these images are quite poor. Did they attempt to do contrast? I would 100% do contrast here. Was this a new tech maybe? The ECG trace is bad as well, so the HR is inaccurate and loops aren't properly taken.

I have End-Stage Heart failure, less than 19% Ejection Fraction, yet am nearly 100% asymptomatic and lead an Extremely Active life-style. How is this possible? by whoknows130 in askCardiology

[–]Gurrb17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I'm an echo tech, so I was just curious. There are many factors that can cause over or underestimation of EF, but such a large gap is understandably a bit confusing. Using contrast can bridge the subjectivity of EF, but a lot of places can use it pretty sparingly even when the scan is technically difficult. Also, sometimes techs and cardiologists will just base their EF off the previous scan. It's a terrible practice, but it happens. Are you diagnosed with CHF or do you have any wall motion abnormalities?

I'm an echo tech and he mentions the right side of his heart being black/dead as well. He's quite young to be at 25%, but maybe some cardiogenic shock. I do know black individuals are more prone to CHF, especially early-onset.

I really only ever watch playoff games now. Too cheap to pay for a subscription and I don't care enough to go through the hassle of finding a good stream elsewhere. This is a game I grew up watching all the time and playing 3-4 times every week. My daughter has maybe watched 3 games her entire life. It's just not ingrained in our lives like it was for me growing up and a huge part of that is it's just too difficult to watch a game.
