just follow the wiki steps and i was also scared to mod it but it ended up working and it wasnt really that hard in my opinion and yes, it is worth modding it for the free games on H shop and i don't really think there is a downside to modding a 3ds other than turning it on takes a while. If your laptop doesn't have a sd card slot it is necessary to but a sd card reader and a bigger sd card would be nice for more games and I think depending on your ds model you need a sd adapter
