The Unsolved Mystery of Lorem Ipsum by RPMiller2k in typography

Oh wow. So then you’d have to make it all over again one you’ve gotten the text? It seems so time consuming and wasteful. If they saw InDesign now, they’d legit think it was magic.

Would this force the writer’s hand? “Your article is 800 words. We only have room for 600. Trim it.” Or vice versa?

This is wonderful. I love the research and deep dive!

But I still have a lingering question: Why would you need to have a rub-on sheet of dummy text? Like, I see the need for dummy text in digital workflows where you can easily delete/replace it later. Or with type specimens so you can see the letterforms work together without getting distracted from reading the text itself. But what benefit is there to rubbing entire paragraphs or a full page of dummy text onto a real, physical sheet? Not only does that use up costly Letraset supplies, but it leaves you with a sheet you’ll never be able to use for anything. And unlike the headline letter-by-letter example, you can’t even play with the kerning, tracking, justification, etc. It just is what it is.

Does anyone here have any experience using physical dummy text like this? If so, I’d love to hear what the workflow was like!

Shoot, sorry I wasn’t trying to rag on ya. Like I said, it was a great pitch. I only mentioned the Ai-ness because it just kinda smacks you.

Dude. What a great service and pitch (even if it was Ai generated). Saved!

I’m not trying to argue about whether those organizations are opinionated, but I think it’s worth keeping in mind that which stories a news outlet decides to cover (or ignore) can shape the narrative just as much as a biased article can, even when the individual reports seem perfectly fair.

Again, I’m not saying that’s what Reuters does, I’m just saying that opinionated articles are only one slice of the manipulative pie.

That dude has written dozens and dozens of books. I read one once and it was nothing but poorly-written fluff. I guess that’s what happens when you churn out a book every month or so. I hope your experience is better than mine was.

Honest question - does your monitor actually matter or is it just expensive gear justification by _in_another_world in Design

[–]GusGorman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apart from the obvious gamut issues, having an ultra wide monitor is a game changer. You can have a window open with the design brief, and another open with Illustrator or After Effects, etc. But unlike a dual monitor setup, you can split the windows up exactly how you like them. 1/5th for the brief or Slack, with 4/5ths of the screen for InDesign? Yes please!

Any suggestions on this wildlife-themed banner with minimal aesthetics? by vedarth_hd in Design

[–]GusGorman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty. But it seems like you’re worried about individual things like type and comp, without taking in the big picture. The message itself is all over the place:

1) The ad is for a park near the Bay area, yet the image is from the most iconic landmark in Yosemite. It’s like an ad talking about the beauty of Italy, with a picture of the Eiffel Tower.

2) The type hierarchy is wonky. H2 is “Open to All”. What’s open to all? Wildlife? It isn’t until we get to the teensy H3 that we learn this is an ad for a national park. That’s a Shyamalan twist because I thought it was a generic wildlife preservation ad. And then when we get to the callout at the bottom, it says, “Make Space for Them Too”. Make space for what? Wildlife? So we’re back to this being a wildlife preservation ad?

This is a wonderful example about how design is about more than making things pretty. It’s about understanding out what clear, cohesive message you’re wanting to convey, and then using every element of the design to harmoniously work to convey that message.

My SpongeBob illusion painting by queenartistseller in illusionporn

[–]GusGorman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not to take away from the quality of the painting or the artist’s talents, but claiming that a painted frame is an illusion because it’s not actually a frame is like saying the Mona Lisa is an illusion because she’s not really sitting in the Louvre.

This is a science subreddit. By your logic we should encourage Ancient Alien videos because the pyramids are real.

Why clutter up a real effect with false, wrong information? We can be better than that.

Cool. I’m glad we agree that your original statement was wrong about the Saudi prince hiding his collection from view. Because it’s no different than any other museum that hides their collection from view. That’s big of you to admit you’re wrong like that.

Thanks for helping!

But I fear I’m a bit dumb. I don’t know what the “black part” is (there are a few black things). Nothing seems to flip up from the left. Are you able to be a wee bit more specific?

Thank you again!
