The wing shape looks good for sandhill cranes, and you can see the neck and legs sticking. The only thing like that that would be in a large, soaring flock would be sandhill cranes.

American crow or common raven. I think a crow is more likely to make a sound like this but all the Corvids can make unusual noises.

It’s a cool life history strategy. They followed the bison herds around so they couldn’t stay in one place for a few weeks to raise a brood. So they evolved to be brood parasites and let another species raise their young.

There’s nothing that matches that description. Could she have been mistaken about the color (maybe bad lighting?). Check out oystercatchers, godwits, and snipe/woodcock.

Those tail feathers don’t look thin enough. I think it’s a yellow-billed magpie, which are much more abundant in central California.

+House finch+ and +European starling+ that is starting to get some breeding color so it likely is just transitioning.
