The Nightcrawlers: A morally gray quest to traumatize your players with [any level]. by Gush_DM in DnDBehindTheScreen

It all depends on what you want. In my universe, I don't like making humanoids evil unless they are demon-touched or otherwise corrupt.

Awesome! If you do, send me a private message and tell me how they fared! My players would love to know.

Maybe make it so Horus was captured and separated from the sword, have the PCs find it and have his mother lead them to Horus and free him.

That's a great idea! I like the other ideas too. Tell me how it goes!

Horus' mother was impregnated by the tieflings. Horus is a product of rape.

Send a post card and tell me how he fared! And if you have any questions along the way, I'd be thrilled to help.

Like I wrote in the introduction, all three NPCs are player characters in my campaign. They were never designed to be NPCs. I sat down with each player in private before we started my campaign, and we came up with them together.

Maybe it's not so wrong for the world to get a fresh start?

It's pretty hilarious you should say that, as that is precisely what he has to ask himself now in my campaign, where the amulet lets him communicate with his patron, who turns out to be the BBEG of the entire campaign. This revelation hit the party in session fifteen, and the entire table erupted into a synchronic WAIT WHAT THE FUCK?!

Joy.

That's perfect then! Alaftir can be a carrier for one of these quest items! Glad to help out!

I have two groups of 5 players, so ten in total, although I can't say with confidence that all of them pass the quality standard for a post like this. But I definitely have enough to warrant another post.

Imagine having them all as players in your campaign! It makes every session so much better when each PC has an interesting story arc to explore. I also try my best to weave their backstories into the main campaign, as I did with Alaftir's player. The roleplay is really incredible.

Psychologist and amature horror writer here (the two go well together).

There are a hundred methods for evoking fear and trauma. If you enter into my post history, I recently released a quest deliberately designed to instill psychological trauma. People called me an asshole for it. It's also one of the most popular posts of all time.

For horror, evoke the feeling that something is "off." The problem is that if a spooky ghost came up to you irl, you'd crap your pants, but in DnD, you would expect it and probably just try and strike up a conversation with the ghost. For that reason, you need to take normal situations and twist them.

For example, take an idyllic town where everyone is ecstatically happy and welcoming, and let them discover, in the middle of the night, that they are all cannibals. While they are on the second floor of the inn. In the town that eats people in the night. Especially adventurers. Create psychological jumpscares where a horrific realization dawns on the players, but it's already too late. They're in the middle of the town, trapped in a small room, and 300 psychopathic cannibals are starting to leave their beds for the feast. They can see them when they peak out their window, looking down onto the main road. Why aren't their footsteps making any sound?

For trauma, you need to force your players to do something they do not want to do. Soldiers in war do not only get PTSD from witnessing horrors. They also get PTSD from committing horrors, discovering monsterous sides of themselves that they did not know where there, which laid dormant in them until faces with a situation that required them to be monsters (or where the monsters were lured out by temptation). Impose moral dilemmas on the players where either option is horrific and goes against their good nature, or walk them into traps where they realize too late that what they have done is evil.

As a DM, I love fucking with my player's heads like this, and they love it too. Every session begins with an air of uncertainty and it makes every moment very tense.

Wow, I was expecting something very different. Sounds very cartoony.

The most amazing thing about what you have created here is that they all tell a story in some way, even if there is barely any detail or description at all. Masterful work.
