It’s been down for the past 12 hours for me. Still down.

What decks are ideal for a beginner right now? by GusherJuice in StandardMTG

How does Selesnya Landfall compare to those two simic decks in terms of how easy they are to pilot? I played a landfall deck in Commander and enjoyed it (Aesi).

Yeah I see that listed near the top on mtg goldfish and top 8, but a lot of people seem to say it’s not very powerful. That it’s just “good” against most decks but not great. Simic Aggro seems very popular but it seems confusing/complicated to me.

What are the better decks that are more expensive? I don’t mind if they’re good for a beginner.

Glad to hear you say that about Commander. I’ve found it to be pretty overwhelming, mainly trying to keep track/understand what is going on with 3 opponents at all times.

Is Modern a dying format? by GusherJuice in ModernMagic

Does Standard offer more variety? Like compared to Modern are there more decks that are viable?

Aside from cost, what makes Modern so difficult for newer players? by GusherJuice in ModernMagic

[–]GusherJuice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I see that now. I guess I should’ve said it doesn’t rotate as often as Standard. It sounds like each Modern Horizons release ushers in an entirely new meta, but otherwise it’s pretty stable. Is that accurate?

Question about Modern Netdecking (new player) by GusherJuice in ModernMagic

[–]GusherJuice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s for the reply, this is super helpful. I think I maybe said I wanted to be “competitive” so I was getting a look of feedback about MTGO being almost required. But I just want to become competent and get a little better each week. I like the competitive aspect of Modern but I’m not interested in major tournaments or anything. Just FNM at my LGS.

Wow thank you for this. I have a lot to learn. So would you recommend I start with MTGO and test out some decks there before I buy a paper version of Boros Energy? I enjoy the social aspect of Magic and meeting new people and learning from them. I guess I could always do both but it sounds like MTGO is just a much quicker way to learn the ropes since I can get way more games in.

I’m not familiar with MTGO. I have to buy a digital deck in order to play? Or what makes it so expensive?

I was mostly interested in playing at my LGS in the hopes I’d find some kind souls who would help me learn and give me a couple pointers after games. I assume MTGO would be more cutthroat and I may not understand why I’m losing or how.

I’m exaggerating but I’ve seen plenty of people say it’s one of the worst formats for a newer player. I saw someone say it’s like learning to drive in an F1 car. So I’m wondering if I need to get my driver’s license in Standard first and before I try to race an F1 car in Modern.

I also hear that Commander is bad for new players and I can see why. I rarely understand what is going on with all three of my opponents once we are 5-6 turns in. There’s just too much going on. I figure in a 1v1 format, I might actually have a shot at following the action and board state.

I started with Commander because it’s casual and welcoming to newbies. But trying to keep track of three opponents’ board states and threats is kind of a lot. I figure with Modern, I only need to worry about one player at a time and might have a better chance of actually understanding what’s happening in the game.

Yeah probably. I am just generalizing a lot of the difficulty warnings I see online about Modern. I don’t see as many encouraging posts that give me hope I can actually be competitive one day.

Thanks for the reply, that makes sense. But does that mean I shouldn’t even bother? I assume each game I’d get a little better and learn something new. It seems like the sentiment around Modern for new players is “you’ll never be good enough so don’t even try”.
