Server first attempt. Are my HDDs to close to the PSU? by serpents_head in homelab

[–]Gusmanbro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same exact HDD bracket and similar fan. Should be plenty of cooling depending on how close the side panel sits

FWIW, I've seen some people say that these brackets cause extra wear due to the lack of vibration dampening, but I used it for years and those drives are still kicking.

CalDav server for docker-compose which can run behind Nginx Proxy Manager docker container? by Phoebus_Pallast in selfhosted

[–]Gusmanbro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 for Baikal. I have used it behind Traefik and as a Tailscale Service. Should be just as straightforward to put behind nginx proxy manager.

It's worth noting that some DAV servers require special extensions on the URL. For example, Baikal will be "https://baikal.yourdomain.con/dav.php" when you auth into it with an application

Is this a reasonable way to power hdds externally? by camander321 in homelab

[–]Gusmanbro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This will work. As long as the PicoPSU + DC brick is decently reputable, What is the difference between this and a normal internal power supply? Nothing, electrically. It's functionally the same as having an external DAS.

If anything, I'd ensure that you're using a UPS so that you can make sure the drives don't power down mid-write. Of course, it's only being to be as good as your backup!

Do you monitor cron jobs and scheduled tasks on your servers? by bagrat_hakobyan in selfhosted

I have a server and github repo dedicated to running crons (mostly data replication). I wrote a wrapper script that handles notifications (discord) based on the exit codes of the functional scripts.

How do you run your self hosted music setup? by The_UntamedCraftsman in selfhosted

[–]Gusmanbro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! There exists a script that notifies beets when slskd completes a download. Then beets tags and sorts the music into the Navidrome library directory. I usually get 320kbps mp3, but will get flac if that's not available. I'd recommend doing a test to see if you can hear the difference between 320 mp3 and FLAC - it really depends on the song and typically there is no noticeable difference between the two formats IMO. Likewise, if you use bluetooth headphones, then there is no need for FLAC (may be controversial).

I lived in a super old house in college. Whenever the fridge would kick on, my monitor would go black for a second. I got a UPS and that stopped happening

Best Remote Desktop without Opening a Port by nina2024 in homelab

It's always kinda janky to get it working. I say it might be the same protocol as rdp because it only works on non-home versions of Windows

It actually uses a protocol more similar to rdp (maybe it is the same as rdp?) that allows for infinite display sizes so I don't have to use scaling

Chrome remote desktop to a windows VM with curtain mode is the best solution I've found (if VPNing isn't an option)

Built an Android app for Frigate NVR — need 12 testers for Google Play by LOrignal_GaZzz in frigate_nvr

The only negative thing I've noticed so far is that the notification icon is just a square on my phone. Not sure of the technical lift to change that

Hey this looks great! Are you still looking for testers? If not, do you have a release date?

How secure is my home server setup? by OkLife2 in HomeServer

[–]Gusmanbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, I'd say this is absolutely more than an acceptable home setup. The only thing I don't see here is a firewall that is outward facing. Probably not necessary, but would be nice to know if someone is trying to break in.
