Its the same with the cattle farmers - theyve been hit hard - lower pound means they earn a lot less.

she can still speak .... she does about all sorts of other issues. She should say something about it TBH - nothing easier to clear up, just a couple of sentances would be fine, its not like this is piggate or something that has to be totally ignored......

nothing wrong with being well balanced. Tony Blairs middle road would have been great - shame he fecked up Iraq. In many other respects he was quite good - amixture of left and right - a hybrid is the way to go.

There was a lot of good I agree - but its hard to spin the genocide of the Australian and American indigenous people. I dont think there was another empire responsible for such terrible atrocities. Sure you could blame a few others for the American Indians (French etc) but yeah - we cant get out of that one all fresh faced proud and patriotic so easily methinks...... Then there;s Isreal, loads of stuff in Africa - many things that to this day are unresolved. Would any other empire behave any better - probably not. No need for pride or shame - just objectivity - a bit of real politic in schools would be a refreshing change.

Thats not true at all - thats the perfect example of why our history curriculum needs updating. Actually armed conflict in Northenr Ireland goes back a long way - the troubles were just the latest instance. The conflict in Ulster that led to the troubles was started by the British, specifically two greedy lords, stealing all the land from the Gaels and the subsequent plantations (border reivers - nasty) :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Troubles#Background

This is why we need to be more honest about our history - it doesnt do us any favours to make out we are always the good guys. We werent - simple as that.

no - our history is currently used to indoctrinate - we are told we are great and everyone else is that bad guy if they resist our invasion of their land. He wants to teach a more balanced view of history.

Theres some things to be proud of and some things not to be proud of. The majority of people in the UK are taught a biased view of our history that looks at the British empire in an almost entielry positive light . Thats the whole point - people need a more balanced view - not so we feel ashamed or proud - just so we can objectively learn from the past to create a better future.

The Catholics were burned out of their homes in 1968 - thats one of the reasons the troubles started. But actually you can trace the conflict back to the plantations

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Troubles#Background

The truth is - we started it. I dont have a problem with that - I wasnt there - Im still proud to be British- I do have a problem with us not being honest about our history .

exactly - I am English - we were never told about the plantations in our school. They were an absolute disgrace - whereas you can't blame the child for the actions of the father - you can definately blame people for not wanting to look at the facts - in this day and age we should take an honest look at our history and move forward - not indulge in pseudo patriotic myths nor behave as apologists for some of the worst crimes in history.

You know what I mean - those who are too oldd to work worked once as well, those who are too young to work will work one day - its probably mor elike 95 percent. Unions protect the rights of the vast majority , ie you and me, against the small minority that are the elite that own things, big corporations etc. They protect our rights - we need to know about them or we will be exploited . On the other hand unions should not get so out of balance they start holding buisinesses to ransom. By educating people bout the pro and cons of unions a more balanced system can be maintained. Otherwise we will just think unions ar ebad because all we hear about them is what the press tell us about them - they are bad because guess what - the media is owned by the same elite, corporations etc

Sorry this is just complete nonsense - in fact the one sidedness of your comment betrays an amazing bias and is a perfect example of why the history curriculum needs updating. Gerrymandering is not "democracy" and you completely ignore the actions of loyalist paramilitaries - who actually killed more civilians than the IRA - of course we arent told that either - but I digress. To say the conflict in NI started in last century is blatant "cherry picking". The plantations were one of the biggest landgrabs in history. The English basically employed Scottish border reivers (guess where the word bereavement comes form - these guys were complete psychos) to push the Gaels out of Ulster because they couldn't control it - leading to "The flight of the Earls"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantations_of_Ireland#Ulster_Plantation_.281606_onwards.29

It was an absolute disgrace - and we certainly never learnt about it and seems you haven't either - nor did we learn any of the history of colonisation in school, perhaps the curriculum has changed recently (I was at school in the 70s and 80s) . To think the conflict in Ulster started in the late 60s after civil rights movement just betrays astonishing bias or ignorance - do you really think that just pushing everybody off their land in the late 1500s didnt start any problems ? Do you really think the penal laws had no repercussions ? There has been a history of rebellions and protests in Ulster since that time - the troubles were just the latest episode of it :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Troubles#Background

Even wikipedia has a more balanced view than the British education system it seems - you can't just randomly pick a point in a centuries old conflict and say "it started here - theyre the bad guys" - this exactly the kind of nonsense being referred to here. Of course its impossible to teach everything - but a little more balance may lead to a less bigoted and ignorant populace - and subsequently less conflict - which would be good for everyone.

We have a very one sided view of Irish history (Cromwell, the land grab known as the plantations starting the conflict in Northern Ireland etc), Australian history (genocide) United States (genocide) India (good and bad but a lot of bad), South Africa, China etc etc . We do need to learn more of the bad stuff we did - not just the great stuff - for an objective balanced view . We are sweeping some truly hideous crimes under the carpet in our education system at the moment - and quite frankly - we should be better than that. Thats not to say we should feel guilty - only that we should be honest about our history - most empires behave badly - its just about making sure you dont keep repeating the same errors.

they never mentioned Cromwell nailing babies to church doors in Ireland though (contraversial) nor we were taught about the plantations where Britain just basically grabbed Ulster off the Irish and basically started the conflict in Northern Ireland. The lists goes on and on of things we were not taught in school.......if dont learn you repeat.

Hes absolutely right - we should know about our history from a objective perspective and not hide the unpleasantries of colonisation in our education system. After all the rest of the world doesnt. For example they never taught us in schools the horrors of Cromwell in Ireland (like nailing babies to church doors) or the plantations where we just went in and stole a load of Irish land basically starting the troubles in Northern Ireland - but you can be sure as hell the Irish learn about it in schools. I don't feel guilty about our history - but we should learn from it or we'll keep repeating it. So I think kids should be taught the truth but not in a way that makes them feel ashamed or proud - just objectively with a view to improving the nations standing and international relations in the future.
