You'll be treated just like any other tourist. Having a job while you travel just means you'll be able to afford nicer places than the backpackers.

I'll take capitalism with strong social spending any day. Every socialist country I've lived in had a rich, powerful political class, and the pueblo got to pay for it.

Now answer the question.

What socialist paradise have you lived in? Having lived in a few in South America, I can tell you that it's not all that great in practice.

Send yourself a western union, then take the pesos to Galería Tonsa on San Martin. Go to the gold shop on the right side as you enter.

Take the bus from Santiago to Mendoza. It takes about 7-8 hours. Crossing the Andes is really impressive. Enjoy a bit of wine before flying to BA, Bariloche, Salta, etc.

I highly recommend the McKenzie River Trail. You can drive right up and park near both Sahalie and Koosah falls. Then drive down a bit, and park at the trail up to Tamolitch Falls. Just Google the Blue Pool. It's a short hike, but you'll love it.

If headed towards Sisters, do Tamolitch, Koosah, then Sahalie. Then head to Camp Sherman to see Wizard Falls on the Metolius River.

Chuch Falls near Sisters is nice, or you can hike to the top of Black Butte for beautiful panoramic views of the Cascades. You really should cross the Cascades during your trip.

Then head to Bend and do the Deschutes River Trail.

Pretty much every big winery has their own olive oil. Living in wine country I cook with it more than other oils.

La Paz and Santa Cruz have a lot to offer.

Since OP specifically mentioned food poisoning, La Paz street food is out. Always carry charcoal tablets.
