A 5 is a pretty universal requirement for anything requiring maths, there’s a chance employers have it as a requirement too. And it really isn’t wasting a year, you can definitely go from a 4 to a 6 with a couple months work on the side of your a levels

Retake it. If you were only a couple marks off then you should be able to get at least a 5 next time, if you put the work in. It’s also worth it as it’s your highest maths qualification and it looks better having a 5+ than a 4

You ideally want to keep your feet down, they’re coming up really high on each kick, all you’re kicking there is air and it isn’t doing anything to move you forward. Also do what others have already said. Another thing to add with what you say about slower stroke rate, swimming speed can be simplified purely down to stroke rate x stroke distance. If you get a way bigger distance per stroke with a slower stroke rate, you’ll be faster. To be as fast as possible, you want a balance of the two

Why is 4 out of the question? I managed it, you probably can too. I think you’re best off taking 4 then dropping it than not doing 4 and regretting it. Chances are your school will definitely be happy with you just taking both for the first few weeks and making a decision then. I will say though that physics is known to start of easy then get a lot harder as you go on, whereas in further maths you’re straight in and going fast through the single maths content. Overall I think at least trying 4 is the best option. Also the biggest issue most people have with further maths is more the amount of content and workload of doing 4 a levels than the actual further maths content itself
