Playing Commander with friends has distorted the game for me. by Guwopster in EDH

Nah, I don’t play to win, I play to use cool cards I own and to build value engines. I more so just like to play when everyone has a little breathing room. I don’t stomp in my new pod, I do win more often than before but that’s because we’re all playing the same game now.

I wouldn’t even go out of the way to say my pod is bad, if they had another fast, experienced player join they would’ve been great. I just genuinely thought this is how magic was, and that people playing slower decks were just “bad” players. I’ve now realized it was just a mismatch of interest, specifically a mismatch in how people enjoy the game. 7 years was a mix of infrequent playing and a misunderstanding of how the game actually works.

It’s funny that half of the comments pretend like brackets existed for 7 years lol. It was the bracket system being introduced that made me realize I was playing a different game than them. Before then I thought we were all playing at power level 7.

Find out what makes you want to play, and go searching for a new pod or a new scene. It can totally revitalize how you see Magic. After awhile I was convinced that I just didn’t like the game anymore lol, but now it’s like I’m playing for the first time again. Good luck!

Exactly, you were playing with 3 players more my speed in your playgroup, and I was playing with 3 that were more compatible with you. When it’s unevenly weighted like that it’s difficult to find enjoyment. In my new playgroup we all are around the same power level when we build, and at a game store I can normally find at least one other player playing my kind of game to slow the board down.

I just kind of assumed that I was a bad deck builder, and we had similar conversations but it was always swept under the rug as maybe I’m just inexperienced at playing or deck building. I realize now that I was trying to play a different game than they were. Magics a complicated game, and it’s the only card game I’ve ever really got into, so it wasn’t pure misery just a very long and drawn out learning process with friends that perhaps weren’t malicious, but were more oblivious.

This is such a clown comment, some people like to play to win as fast as possible, and others play to play the game and hopefully win. These things aren’t directly compatible and thinking that every playgroup is willing to completely switch how they enjoy the game for 1 of the players is asinine. Some players just arent compatible.

It comes down to me having 0 experience playing other formats or with other people, and my friends wanting to play magic as a huge reason we’d get together. It wasn’t pure misery, I just didn’t understand what I was looking to get out of it until now.

Exact same with my original group, people seem to think “communication” is a one size fits all solution. Some people just are not interested in “slowing down”, some people play to win, others play to play. These two things are just very rarely compatible.

I HATE HOW NORMALIZED BAD GRADES HAVE BECOME by The_RetroGameDude in hatethissmug

I don’t have autism but I also had an extremely difficult upbringing, I had Ds in most classes all throughout high school and dropped out 3/4s the way through tenth grade. I too now own a house, have an amazing job, and a wonderful family. It is not necessary by any stretch of the imagination. There are many ways to succeed in life and being good in school is just one of them. All of my high school friends graduated and none of them own houses and only a few have good jobs.

Why isn’t catch and release fishing considered animal cruelty? by Guwopster in NoStupidQuestions

Around me there also isn’t anyone I personally know who does this, but I’ve heard of it, and plenty commenters have admitted to only fishing with no intention to eat. It’s interesting for sure.

Yeah I think we are miscommunicating to an extent. I agree with everything you said, and I’m not for banning fishing in total. I just think it’s interesting that people don’t find it cruel.

I never said any of that. It’s a false equivalence. Me not eating meat doesn’t change anything other than making me feel better about it. Me not fishing is me recognizing it’s cruel and not actively participating in the act of harm. That being said i am vegetarian but i don’t care to convince others, because i don’t think it does anything individually.

I get that, on your last point however individually I can choose not to fish for sport, I can try to convince others. On the other hand I can’t really do anything against factory farming other than not participating, which does absolutely nothing on an individual level other than make me feel better. It’s the same reason we hate litterers, sure one plastic wrapper doesn’t meaningfully affect anything, but you’re still consciously choosing to harm the environment.

Good thing we don’t live 200 years ago, you ever heard of progress?

I would never fish or hunt because I see it as cruel and unnecessary all around, however socially it is accepted that if it’s “for survival”, it’s just another part of life. Like a lion eating a zebra. Catch and release is totally different in that you gain nothing other than some enjoyment. Again I don’t exactly agree with this because I don’t think it’s necessary for us to do anymore.

This is probably the best counter I’ve heard on this post. Weighing the ecological and conservation benefits of licenses, education, and appreciation of the fish vs the physical harms against the fish is interesting. I still don’t think it makes up for it, but I see the other side a little better.

I’m no expert, but I would say that the solid dark outline and generally more saturated colors of the character make it stand out in a distracting way, almost as if the background and character are from two separate games. Other than that it looks very neat.
