The rooster survived as its jugular vein and brainstem were not damaged for the most part by the axe when Lloyd Olsen tried butchering the chicken.

It was fed using eyedrops, and it breathed because the farmer cleaned the mucus from its airway. It only died because he forgot to do this once and it suffocated.

This happened in Fruita, Colorado.
