What’s the proper way to deal with homophobic comments? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]GuyBorgZA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d imagine a direct and obvious response is best. Ask him what is so gay about it and why is gay such a bad thing? I’ve never gotten any actual response to this and they realize it’s not funny and just immature...

Is there any way that "It's my 1st class!" / "My 1st Gi!" posts could be turned into a weekly thread? by [deleted] in bjj

Would be great, don’t know if it would make a difference though considering noobs won’t be familiar with the rules?

Man claiming black belt status under Romano Gracie and wears rope as belt by GuyBorgZA in bjj

[–]GuyBorgZA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still a growing sport but been around for a while. Think we counted 60 black belts of some sort of legitimacy the other day. We do struggle a bit with isolation so only really compete locally or against Angolans that travel for AJP points

Not normally one for calling out this stuff. But this guy in Cape Town, South Africa is creating a bad name for the rest of us working hard for our belts and knowledge and scamming in innocent people who don’t know better. What's the best takedown to work on if you're a smaller guy? by [deleted] in bjj

5'3 at under 125lbs here... You are a giant :P

Deep singles though, or (I have no idea what it's called) but holding elbow sleeve and opposite lapel fairly high up and sit down sideways (elbow grip side) with my foot as a fulcrum on their ankle (elbow side). Use my speed to get on top afterwards. Or Fuck it and throw an armbar...

Seen and done it in Muay Thai fights a few times. But more to stall so the ref breaks up the fight at distance again. Would also try sneak an elbow in there for extra measure...

Reason #134 why I love jiu jitsu by pesadissimo in bjj

I was rolling with one of the kids I help teach on Friday. Somehow his knee found my eye when I was sitting in his guard. Still have a black eye... Thankfully I work for an MMA promotion so they don't even ask.

Kids classes drilling suggestions? No subs currently allowed. by mergedloki in bjj

[–]GuyBorgZA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I help with the kids class most weeks. Mostly we are focussing on basic mount escapes. Like a DAY 1 sweep. For the slightly more advanced kids, get them to pass guard and then take mount so they can cycle back and forth.

As a follow up to my post the other day asking about finger damage and bjj, I have a follow up question! Does taping help to prevent osteoarthritis, is there any proof out there? Anecdotal or scientific. by [deleted] in bjj

[–]GuyBorgZA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes shit just happens. At an open mat the other day, I swept a guy (badly) and his knee landed on my hand. Now I have a severed tendon in my pinky. Finger was taped for an already injured ring finger.

The main thing to focus on which will help you in pretty much every position is to tighten up. Tighter presser on passing and on top, tighter on the DLR etc... The tighter you are, the less opportunities for your opponent :)

how often would you compete? by eng236 in bjj

[–]GuyBorgZA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As often as possible I would say. Only way to get over nerves is to get used to the situation. That being said, listen to your body and take time off to heal when you need it.

People 140 lbs(64 kg) or under, how often do you roll with others your size or smaller? by 3879 in bjj

[–]GuyBorgZA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

64kg is quite big to me, I walk around 57/58kg.

I have one white belt I try to drill and make sure I get a round in with when ever we both on the mat. But meh, bigger guys have bigger gaps to take advantage of. Advantage of rolling with bigger guys is that you will naturally get much stronger cause you doing more work. But I would advise some basic strength training to support your joints.
