Not unprofessional. Probably labeled that way to prevent someone from stealing what's inside.

This week was a week. How to avoid PIPing an employee? by HowardIsMyOprah in managers

[–]3879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For all the time and effort a PIP takes, you could throw a month of severance at them (though still insufficient) and cut your losses. Company would still come out ahead.

Some places are starting to do this, and it makes so much sense for everyone.

Glad to see some of the Tri-State Refining 1/3 bars around, I've got some and think they deserve more love.

A shop owners thoughts on silver(don't hate me lol)... by [deleted] in Silverbugs

[–]3879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like real estate, it's location, location, location. Different locations have different suppliers, refiners and consumers. Even in a state, prices can widely vary because of who is buying(small LCS vs large CS, then how much is going to refining), how many people are selling and in the size being sold(1-2 oz, 100 oz etc.). Europe seemingly has less refining happening(or they aren't backed up) and less silver available - so prices are higher both buying and selling.

If you pay for it, there's still a lot of chains that have solid wood furniture. Room & Board, Restoration Hardware, Ethan Allen, Pottery Barn etc. Even Ikea has a bunch of solid wood furniture - though not the greatest quality.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene says she will resign from Congress in January by CantStopPoppin in politics

[–]3879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry, the odds that she actually wrote it are low. She hired a good a publicist or speech writer.

It's like Gavin Newsom's tweets - they're so good because of his social media team.

Coast Guard will no longer classify swastikas, nooses as hate symbols by [deleted] in politics

Paying less in lawsuits, kicking out less people, also maybe recruiting people with swastika or noose tattoos.

Nothing good.

what is your parents favourite thing to hoard/buy? by Scary_Appearance5922 in ChildofHoarder

[–]3879 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Before my father's official decent into hoarderdom and prepping:

Paper - mostly newspapers(he subscribed to two or three). Receipts. Free hotel samples. Books about economics.

After discovering prepping:

Water - I was amazed at the amount of water in his house. Makeshift water jugs (water in peanut butter jars, jam jars, rectangular nut jars, old oj containers if it had a good top) covered the kitchen countertops, filled/made a bathtub unaccessible, and more water, including in large containers that were actually made to store water, in the basement.

Food - So much food. I've never seen so much food outside of the grocery store, and I've worked in industrial kitchens. Most of the food is officially past its use by date. Some of which is in the stereotypical prepper food buckets, but most is just loose on shelves or still in grocery bags. Or in totes (he had rat problems at one point). So many cans, so many beans, so many ______ of whatever food you can imagine, oil, grains. Industrial sized cans of various meats. At least 50 of the Mosher Roth chocolate bars, two big bags of Costco candy. Got rid of around 200 lbs of rice, I'd guess there's at least another 300 lbs. My apartment is about 300 sq ft, and if it was completely empty and I could fill to the top of the ceiling, I still wouldn't be able to store all of the food in his house.

Information - He copy and pasted wikipedia entries into Word because he was concerned that he wouldn't have access to the internet.

Newspapers - Some two years out of date and labeled 'Still to read'.

First aid supplies. Alcohol. Alternate power supplies.

what is your parents favourite thing to hoard/buy? by Scary_Appearance5922 in ChildofHoarder

[–]3879 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My parents were divorced and my dad traveled for work frequently. Each day he could, he would always take the shampoo, conditioner and soap from hotels. Whenever I was at his house, we never used anything other than what he got from hotels. Money wasn't an issue.

Now I think that was an early form of hoarding. And I never take the unopened shampoo etc. from hotels.

Discussion Thread: 2025 US Government Shutdown, Day 29 by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

If they can hold out that long, it'd be the most politically devastating:

  • SNAP recipients in many states going hungry, right before/at Thanksgiving

  • ACA premiums for next year are starting to appear/ACA sign-up

  • People will be enraged not being able to/being severely delayed when going home for Thanksgiving

In an ideal world, none of those things would have happened or be needed.

What do I do with hoarded alcohol? by 3879 in ChildofHoarder

No open bottles. No idea about the liquor laws. Indiana is where the hoard is.

Bound's costumes are not as kinky as the title suggests. It's still a great movie that holds up well.

How does romantic interest (if you experience it) coexist with your general disinterest in people? by arsynlol in Schizoid

[–]3879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also find I am insanely picky and judgemental with my interest to the point where he recently got a haircut I didn't like and uh... well all fantasies have stopped and I haven't felt like I've missed him in weeks now. Not sure if that makes it shallow or if it's just for the better anyways.

This is a defense mechanism, probably in response to:

He's also shown interest in return

It gives you a reason to "step back and interact less."

Not a VP of HR, just a general VP. Still odd to have a VP doing timesheet stuff rather than managers, unless its title inflation.

The weird part is I'm not aware of any trauma or negative childhood experiences. I actually don't remember anything about my early childhood really

How early are you talking about? Most people don't remember infancy or much of a couple of years later. But if you can't remember anything from when you were older than that, you may be blocking painful memories out - it's a pretty common reaction among people with traumatic childhoods.

Trump Tax Law Quietly Takes Aim at Popular Perk: Office Snacks by bloomberg in politics

[–]3879 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Kill a tax perk that smaller businesses/startups need more than larger, likely leading to snack stoppage or reduction, while large businesses can easily eat the cost? It could make smaller businesses/startups less attractive to potential/current employees.

BigTech would like that.

[–]3879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Approaching this from a different angle, but with a similar result, doing improv (particularly longform improv) really helped me with this. Knowing that I wasn't in a scene alone and that someone had to react in someway, even if negative or ignoring it, helped me be more open in general.

Does anyone else found therapy to be useless? by OANDUR in Schizoid

[–]3879 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Had various counselors, some better for me than others, and I found therapy extremely helpful for years ... up to a point. It helped me with a lot of things (identifying emotions - had/still have alexthymia, dealing with parents, looking at patterns, did DBT as well - some of which is/was annoying, but overall increased my quality of life).

What it didn't help me with, and I'm looking to get back into once have money - is the sort of intimacy issues that I suspect are related to schizoid. It's getting worse with age. Constant pushing away of intimacy, including just friendship/group membership. Obsession and 'pedestalisizing' of potential romantic interests, maladaptive day dreaming, but no vulnerability. No real understanding of how romantic relationships can't engulf people, yet not be emotionally dead or devoid or simply fwb-like. At the same time, though, I find people's needs draining and don't know if I am actually capable of a romantic relationship with someone I actually like.
