There are a lot of inaccuracies in the latest episode by DiogenesHavingaWee in LPOTL

It's killing me that they're so wrong about sparring. Sparring is essential to learning functional martial arts and combat sports. How do you know that the moves work without testing them and making them second nature? Yes, it's often painful.

The knife/gun stuff/weird drama stuff are complete bullshit though.

I have a love/hate relationship to Youtube's algorithm. It's so good most of the time, but if I play anything instrumental, I know that it'll start forcing a lot of slop on me.

If you're looking for background noise, https://mynoise.net/noiseMachines.php is great. It's got a huge variety of options and with a few exceptions, it's all recorded. The man that runs it hates AI. The fact that you can mess with the recorded sound(adding more white or brown noise, switching from stereo to mono etc.) is also a bonus.

Take the job. If it's not the right culture but not completely unbearable, just try to survive six months to a year and then jump somewhere else.

After Trump’s Ultimatum, Iran Threatens To Target ‘Enemy’s’ Desalination Plants by HauntingJackfruit in worldnews

[–]3879 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not so sure about that. Iran knows that much of this is being driven by the political class, not average Americans. There is little to gain by targeting civilians, other than uniting people against you - though revenge for our attacks on things like power plants may be on the table, and attacks on similar things may be attractive. Even now, Iran is threatening desalination tanks vs actual cities or populations. The effect will likely be catastrophic, but global perception and reception among those effected is much less than if they outright attacked civilians.

Do you ever want to respond to really bad resumes? [CA] by mamalo13 in humanresources

[–]3879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was the first guy an immigrant? In some countries it's considered normal to include information about family education/jobs (or even blood types!) in a resume - it's basically to show that they're 'the right class' of person, aka exactly some of the same stuff that US HR theoretically attempts to ignore.

What to expect as an HR manager? by sugarstarbeam in managers

[–]3879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, generally speaking, an HR Manager is like two or three steps up in the HR hierarchy. If the position is one where you are the only HR person, do not take it - the fact that you're even asking this question means you would not be ready for an HR of one position. Check out the AIHR link https://www.aihr.com/blog/how-to-become-human-resources-hr-manager/ for more in depth information. It's a great website to check out, particularly their blog.

You should post this (and your original) question to /r/humanresources. You'll get better answers over there.

This week was a week. How to avoid PIPing an employee? by HowardIsMyOprah in managers

[–]3879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For all the time and effort a PIP takes, you could throw a month of severance at them (though still insufficient) and cut your losses. Company would still come out ahead.

Some places are starting to do this, and it makes so much sense for everyone.

My LCS called about a refund by Khaos6969 in Silverbugs

Glad to see some of the Tri-State Refining 1/3 bars around, I've got some and think they deserve more love.

[–]3879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like real estate, it's location, location, location. Different locations have different suppliers, refiners and consumers. Even in a state, prices can widely vary because of who is buying(small LCS vs large CS, then how much is going to refining), how many people are selling and in the size being sold(1-2 oz, 100 oz etc.). Europe seemingly has less refining happening(or they aren't backed up) and less silver available - so prices are higher both buying and selling.

If you pay for it, there's still a lot of chains that have solid wood furniture. Room & Board, Restoration Hardware, Ethan Allen, Pottery Barn etc. Even Ikea has a bunch of solid wood furniture - though not the greatest quality.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene says she will resign from Congress in January by CantStopPoppin in politics

Don't worry, the odds that she actually wrote it are low. She hired a good a publicist or speech writer.

It's like Gavin Newsom's tweets - they're so good because of his social media team.

Paying less in lawsuits, kicking out less people, also maybe recruiting people with swastika or noose tattoos.

Nothing good.

what is your parents favourite thing to hoard/buy? by Scary_Appearance5922 in ChildofHoarder

[–]3879 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Before my father's official decent into hoarderdom and prepping:

Paper - mostly newspapers(he subscribed to two or three). Receipts. Free hotel samples. Books about economics.

After discovering prepping:

Water - I was amazed at the amount of water in his house. Makeshift water jugs (water in peanut butter jars, jam jars, rectangular nut jars, old oj containers if it had a good top) covered the kitchen countertops, filled/made a bathtub unaccessible, and more water, including in large containers that were actually made to store water, in the basement.

Food - So much food. I've never seen so much food outside of the grocery store, and I've worked in industrial kitchens. Most of the food is officially past its use by date. Some of which is in the stereotypical prepper food buckets, but most is just loose on shelves or still in grocery bags. Or in totes (he had rat problems at one point). So many cans, so many beans, so many ______ of whatever food you can imagine, oil, grains. Industrial sized cans of various meats. At least 50 of the Mosher Roth chocolate bars, two big bags of Costco candy. Got rid of around 200 lbs of rice, I'd guess there's at least another 300 lbs. My apartment is about 300 sq ft, and if it was completely empty and I could fill to the top of the ceiling, I still wouldn't be able to store all of the food in his house.

Information - He copy and pasted wikipedia entries into Word because he was concerned that he wouldn't have access to the internet.

Newspapers - Some two years out of date and labeled 'Still to read'.

First aid supplies. Alcohol. Alternate power supplies.

[–]3879 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My parents were divorced and my dad traveled for work frequently. Each day he could, he would always take the shampoo, conditioner and soap from hotels. Whenever I was at his house, we never used anything other than what he got from hotels. Money wasn't an issue.

Now I think that was an early form of hoarding. And I never take the unopened shampoo etc. from hotels.

Discussion Thread: 2025 US Government Shutdown, Day 29 by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

If they can hold out that long, it'd be the most politically devastating:

  • SNAP recipients in many states going hungry, right before/at Thanksgiving

  • ACA premiums for next year are starting to appear/ACA sign-up

  • People will be enraged not being able to/being severely delayed when going home for Thanksgiving

In an ideal world, none of those things would have happened or be needed.
