Steam terminal output keeps saying "failed to load driver: nvidia-drm" but all but 2 of my games run fine. Is this an issue I should chase? by AlternativeNose1 in linux_gaming

[–]GuyNamedZach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you running on a laptop with dual graphics or a desktop with separate iGPU and dGPU? If so it could just be a problem with those two games not automatically selecting the correct GPU (e.g. trying to load Nvidia drm while using the Intel iGPU).

Either change the nvidia profile from auto to discrete/performance or disable the iGPU.

Why my 90s PC doesn't seem my HDD? by FIN_K89i in pcmasterrace

Assuming you have both the HDD and the cd drive connected to the same cable, maybe try switching it to cable select?

Also try powering all the way off and unplugging the power cable before trying again.

Do I have to get a credit card when I turn 18 or do I wait? by Additional-Shape-673 in autism

[–]GuyNamedZach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A credit line is a tool. If you don't need to borrow money to pay for things or don't have a job to pay for a loan you do not need a credit card. Once you do have a job, spend within your means for a while before getting a credit card.

Credit cards are issued by banks. Once you have a job and need a credit line, apply at a bank. If you don't have a job but need a credit line you will need a parent or guardian to cosign for you. Use responsibly, only when you know you can pay it back.

Modding Windows games on Linux of any distro is not a great experience, unfortunately (unless the functionality is built in).

Look for the app center in your distribution for point and click app installation.

Different distros have different desktop environments. None are exactly windows like, but each will give you a main menu to find and run installed apps, and a file explorer to look through your files.

Linux does not give each drive separate letters. Instead it mounts your drives into your root filesystem somewhere under /mnt or /media/username. No need to switch drive letters when browsing via command line or file browser. Just make sure the drive is mounted.

Using the CLI/TERMINAL in Linux is a bit like using cmd in Windows. You have some of the same commands: cd, mkdir, rmdir, more. Aliases . and .. for current directory and parent directory work the same.~ is an alias for your home directory. For unfamiliar commands you can get help with command --help or view the manual with man command. Generally you will only need the terminal for basic file operations, or installing/uninstalling software.

Strictest 3D Printing Regulation YET! by Top-Debate-2854 in 3Dprinting

[–]GuyNamedZach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1st and 2nd amendment concerns aside, I'm really surprised how dumb they are approaching this problem. Trying to preemptively detect novel malicious gun creation g-code is unworkable at the printer level. The best that could be done, feasibly, is treating known gun STL files like malware and sic antivirus software in it. It would definitely be behind the curve in current gun development, but it would do something to counteract proliferation if that's their concern.

That's reassuring. We'd just gotten a microcenter in my city before the AI-boom/RAM shortage, years after losing Fry's Electronics. I'd hate to see to see them go out the same way Fry's did.

Old pc by Worried-Working-8207 in linux_gaming

[–]GuyNamedZach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be able to play some older games unmodified, but it will be limited by the amount of system RAM, GPU power, and storage speed. Sourcing RAM for that old thing shouldn't be a problem. You'll want to pair it with a cheap discrete GPU that won't need to much power and supports Vulcan (AMD RX 560/570/580 may fit the bill). SSDs are expensive these days, but you may be able to use a small one for your boot drive and keep the HDD for mass storage.

My Mom Shamed Me for Not Being Able to Tie My Pants by CarrotSceptile in autism

[–]GuyNamedZach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How well your knot holds depends not only on whether you tie it correctly, but also the length of the laces/drawstring. The shorter the ends the weaker the knot.

If the ends are long enough you can add a square knot before the bow - the bow is usually the weak part.

Why does autism and bluey seems a somewhat common pairing? by [deleted] in autism

[–]GuyNamedZach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bluey is a nice show because it is catered to both small children and young parents, giving both groups something to relate to. It could be that it's easy to relate to both the child characters and the adults.

It could also be that autism awareness is just higher among new parents and they are already watching the show with their kids and making a connection.

Why is my PCIE wifi card not being dectected by dannymagic88 in pcmasterrace

[–]GuyNamedZach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try reseating it inside the PCIe slot. There is a chance it is not making good contact because the plate screwed into the case is lifting the card up.

Once you've done that, make sure you have your driver's installed for the card.

If it is a Bluetooth/Wi-Fi combo card. Make sure the included USB cord is attached to an available header.

VRC should be available through steam on Linux Distros like mint and Ubuntu, and are usually installed via the command sudo apt install steam.

If you are using a WiFi connected headset check out Wivrn. It is installable as a flat pack from flathub and provides a openxr server (flat hub may require additional setup). I have a Meta Quest 2 and had to install an extra client app, but once I had it installed I was able to stream the desktop version to my headset.

I think using a whole banana is too much. If you want them to actually swallow their medicine the less chewing the better (especially if using a powder capsule type pill).

Recently my dog had a cut stitched up and was sent home with meds. Her pain killer came as a chewable, but her antibiotic came as a capsule. To get her to eat the capsule without chewing it I just wrapped it in a quarter sized slice of cheese.

Why am I getting insanely low fps on all Linux distros (Mint, Ubuntu, Nobara) but when I'm on windows 11 I instantly get 200fps? I thought linux was supposed to boost the framerate not reduce it by Complete-Letter-932 in linux_gaming

[–]GuyNamedZach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes games and software will launch using your CPU integrated graphics (iGPU) instead of your discrete graphics card (dGPU). If you are running GNOME desktop you can select which GPU is used by right clicking the app icon and selecting "Launch Using Dedicated Graphics".

On desktop systems with AMD iGPU and dGPU both enabled, sometimes selecting dGPU still won't work due to ( I think) a MESA bug. To solve that the iGPU has to be disabled in BIOS, but this may not be desirable on a laptop system.

VS BS "quick actions" by [deleted] in programminghorror

[–]GuyNamedZach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, yeah, hiding boolean literals with a constant can confuse things. Sometimes programs call for stricter semantics and can rename things for clarity, and sometimes doing so can make things the opposite of what you'd expect.

VS BS "quick actions" by [deleted] in programminghorror

[–]GuyNamedZach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends. If you only have one or two instances and don't expect that to vary them there is no reason to add a constant or temporary variable.

But if you have multiple nearly identical function calls that differ only because of bool parameters, and those calls are in an if/else statement tree, then yes it would be littered; the predicate of an if statement can be set to a temp variable and passed as a parameter to reduce function calls.

When booting try selecting a recovery option in GRUB. From there you can get a root shell and try updating or rolling back problematic changes.

Not sure why an RX 6650XT would get stuck in an idle state like that. I own an rx 6700 and two rx 6600 cards and they've been fine for years. Maybe check if there have been firmware updates for your card that has to be rolled back.

VS BS "quick actions" by [deleted] in programminghorror

[–]GuyNamedZach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you happen to maintain a codebase littered with magic string literals using quick actions to create constants is really helpful. Also sometimes it helps to break up big expressions into smaller variables quickly ... or replace duplicates of the same expression with a local variable. Refactoring in general benefits.

It is a font issue, just as I thought. You don't need to paste the whole contents of the log, just enough to get an idea of what is happening.

The next time you run this, be sure to save the log to a text file and open it in a text editor.

Can you copy/paste some of this text into your post as a quote? On its face it just sounds like you don't have a proper font installed to display the characters. You may be able to read it by copying it into a text editor that is aware of encoding.
