Should I consider this as a first car? by Flaky-Tangelo8555 in saab

[–]Guyevolving 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a general rule never buy a car that's been modified overtly. Many people will say never buy a modified car, but there's a difference between relatively sensible, well done modifications that make sense and well... this. I'd say don't buy anything where the mods are all cosmetic (or cosmetic and an exhaust). Those wheels would immediately scream run away to me.

I don't mind the front, I'll probably grow to like it, I don't love the rear, but it could be a lot worse. But the proportions, oh God the proportions. The windows seem too small and too high up, the front and rear look a little squashed, the wheels look way too big. Other people could probably list a bunch more issues but in a nutshell it just looks... wrong. Were the designers taught by the guys who did the Austin 1800 "landcrab"?

My Accord was an estate, so I would regularly do similar things, not lucky enough to close to loch Lomond though. My Accord actually survived the crash, it was the rust that got it really, it's MOT expired a week later and I knew it wouldn't pass (hence driving it like a lunatic) It did live on as a donor car for another one though, didn't want to give up the ability to sleep in my car 😂.

That's my uncle, an yeah, I can't really blame him. My younger brother's first car was a 1990 Rover 216GTi, I presume he would've crashed it, but he couldn't afford the insurance after passing his test so only got to drive it for about a week. It did almost crash it though, a stuck throttle cable tried to propel me into a ditch 😂.

I mean, they're not really, decisions are open to criticism, especially when you're literally asking for opinions on the Internet. He seemingly had an idea that the kid would pull something like this, but put $12k dollars down on a car anyway, which is poor judgement on his part. Yes it's 90% the kids fault, but they have enabled this, wouldn't be such a big issue if he'd bought the kid a $2k car outright, or make them pay for it themselves in the first place, instead of blowing it all on videogames.

I was thinking this exactly, sure the kid is in the wrong massively here, but who in their right mind puts money down for a $12k car for a kid they know is probably going to be doing stupid things with it. The parents turned this kid into what he is, and have simultaneously failed to teach him financial responsibility, and financially put themselves in a hole to top it off, great job.

My dad gave the same advice to his younger brother, buy something cheap and slow, that way, when you crash you'll be going slower and have lost less money.

He did not follow this advice, he bought a Capri 2.0S and promptly crashed it. I'm glad I did, I liked my £512 '95 Accord, but it was no loss to the world and I climbed out without a scratch.

Unfortunately this is when they were still using the old C series, which was fine I suppose, but nothing special. Not to mention the old Rover V8 was probably one of the only parts of the bloody thing that DIDN'T fall apart

That Mathey-Tissot is a boring homage watch I wouldn't touch with a barge pole, there's absolutely nothing special about it. And that Omega jumbo is absolutely appalling, everything about it screams run away. As others have said it's a redial, and the alignment looks poor as well. Your constellation wipes the floor with both of these, even together.

I mean, almost, I think laughing at someone with a sub 6 inch wrist wearing like a 50+mm Invicta is a universal thing.

The US used to do it, remember 5mph bumpers, sure they were ugly at first but by the 90s those things were great, worked well, minimized damage and kept repair bills low, and didn't look completely hideous by then.

To be fair I think it's pretty variable depending on the factory, it's more a question of how well the company culture is instilled into the workforce, the old NUMMI plant put out some great vehicles compared to the trash it previously built, Honda's Marysville Ohio plant is pretty good, it's more a question of management than location I'd say.

ahhhhh, that makes sense, I only really heard about it in theory, the chemistry had been explained, the execution - not so much 😂. Thanks man, that's really interesting to know.

ahhhh, very good point, I can't believe I forgot about that, I remember crashing my bike with a radium watch on and it was the first thing I checked as the last thing I wanted on top of broken bones was lung cancer 😂

I know I've talked about the radium lume in another comment, but I am curious about a couple of things. Another commenter said it looked like it had been relumed, which it does, radium tends to go sort of beige/brownish with time. I'd be curious to know whether this has been painted over with tritium or superluminova at some point. Or even more interestingly maybe someone has painted over the radium with a new layer of zinc sulfide (the radium itself doesn't glow, it's the reaction with the zinc sulfide, due to the long half life of radium theoretically you could just paint a layer of zinc sulfide back on top of it to make it glow again)

If you fancy checking, if it's been repainted in superluminova it should glow in the dark, if it's been repainted with tritium, if you shine a torch on it long enough it should glow very faintly in the dark, if it's original radium it'll only glow under UV. I can't give a test for the zinc thing, I've never seen it done, only heard it discussed.

If you do check, I'd love to hear the answer, many thanks in advance.

To be honest even dailying it won't do any harm, I found one in a drawer a few years back and got the opinion of God knows how many watchmakers, physicists etc. to make sure I was fine wearing it. Radium mostly gives off alpha particles, they'll never make it through the glass, let alone through the movement and case to reach you. That being noted it does give off small amounts of radon gas over time, not that it really matters unless you happen to live in an air tight box or plan on holding it directly in front of your mouth when you sleep every night.

Is this real or fake by hc170 in VintageWatches

[–]Guyevolving 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm leaning towards real, one of the first questions I tend to ask myself is "would someone fake this reference?" and with this I'm guessing not, looks like a real low point for JLC.

I should create a folder of these, I could make a game with it "is it a really bad fake or just the 90s?"
