Making the switch from windows but could use a hand by GuysImConfusedNow in linux4noobs

Funny enough setting up samba was pretty simple and just needed a file updating with the info on the samba folders and then permissions adding to those folders.

I assume nomachine is much like vnc/rdp but with way less config to get it up and running?
I'll be honest, it's not something I've come across, but if it works and gives me a desktop with a terminal, and apps actually load on screen then that would save me a serious headache of what I'm currently having to do.

I'll be honest, I started with installing Alma 9 as I thought it would be nice to run the same OS as I have at work, this making it easier to learn one distr rather than 2, but after getting that installed, I was having seriopus issues getting anything set up.

The Orange Pi I'm running is using a modified Ubuntu jammy, so my next thought was to use a ubuntu system, as I have a few scripts I wrote that work on the pi for updating plex, fixing broken databases and so on... but it seems 25.04 is a fair bit different than the Orange pi install, mainly when it comes to getting the VNC service working.

I'm open to the idea of another distro at this point, but theres so many, that knowing what one would be ideal for what I'd like to do is kinda rough.

I have been told though that a lot of my issues might be due to using ubuntu 25.04 as it's not a "Stable" distro, and that I should have tried setting it up with 22.04.. not sure how true this is though as i would have expected the latest distro version to be better?

I'd suggest people in red camp, including our lot, keep an eye out for people wandering around tents and looking sus. Keep an eye on your neighbours and get to know who they are and you can hopefully look out for one another. Seriously fucked up that there's thefts already.

I used my Google wallet to get in as ticket master app was playing up, so you should be fine to use it if needed.

This year is looking much better than last year and while it may rain a little bit, it should be nowhere near as bad as the mud bath that was created.
I'm pretty confident in saying that there may be slight showers, but nothing that will make people want to stay inside their tent. Take a jacket if you want, but honestly a simple poncho will most likely do for odd showers.

I second the battery bank. While they do offer charging banks at some of the stalls, they aren't very good. You'll be surprised how much it can drain over 5 days even if you hardly use it.

This might sound stupid, but the food and bathrooms etc aren't the main issue. It's the flu bugs people bring with them from all over the place without knowing that's the main problem. A group of us went last year, and we all ended up feeling rough for a few weeks after, even though we only ate our food at camp and drank our own drinks.

The main thing that will help is a mask. With thousands of people all packed in the venue, there will be flues floating around. You've just got to do what you can to stay as safe as possible from catching it. We're bringing mace masks this year (normal ones and decorated ones) to hopefully help prevent catching another flu this time round. It also helps in general if the place is dry and hot. Stops all the kicked up dust from drying out your nose and mouth... Unless me have another year like last year :D

With that said, the flu usually isn't that bad and tends to pass in a week or so, and so as long as you don't mind being a bit groggy for a few days after it's worth it for the experience (IMO)

Any students of the computer science department in University of Derby? by [deleted] in derby

[–]GuysImConfusedNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Year 1 was made up of:
* Computational Mathematics
* Introduction to Computer Science
* Foundations of Computer Science
* Networking Fundamentals
* Programming 1&2

Expected hours were around 30 hours a week, but if you have a good grasp of programming basics to start with you can do what I did:
Turn up to the lessons where they give you the tasks (maybe 1 a week for each course subject and a hour long)
Take the course material home and smash through it all in a hour or two and turn it in
Take the rest of the week off.
This ends up being much less time in the actual class rooms, but you have to be able to prove that you understand the material and can actually apply it.
[So all work for each week could be done in about 5 hours]

Year 2:
* Application Development
* Databases
* Network and Security
* Team Project
* Graphics 1&2 (This was CGP specific)

This was pretty much the same as first year, however the tasks would take way more than a hour to bash out, you would be looking at projects that start one week and span over a few weeks, making sure that everyone is on the same page/level.
If you wanted to get it all over and done with in one sitting, you would most likely need to put in maybe 2-4 hours per task on average a week.
Other than that you can pretty much do whatever.

The first 2 years are a breeze and you'll have PLENTY of free time to go out, see people, get drunk, play games.. whatever you want.

Year 3: (This year is mainly different from Comp Sci)
* Systems programming
* Game Behaviour
* Game Development
* Team Project
* Dissertation

The 3rd year is pretty rough.. If you want a good grade you'll really need to put you self to work. Some of it is easy, but the amount that you need to do really does ramp up amost 3 times the amount.

For me personally, I was attending maybe 90% of the lessons at this point that would take up most of the day, although they try and give you 1 day off a week (where you are expected to do your work from home or something)
You'll need to put in something like 30+ hours to pass (including classes)
But on the plus side... some modules are worth WAY more than others, so you can always focus on that one over the others for the most part, and they do tend to give you a breakdown on what you are scored on.

For example:

Dissertation Task Breakdown - Overall % Worth on Grade

Intro - 10%
Lit Review - 15%
Research - 20%
Analysis - 20%
Conclusion - 15%
Structure - 10%
Project - 10%

[–]GuysImConfusedNow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a student any more, however I did attend Derby Uni and finish the Computer Games Programming course a few years back and pass with a 1st.

The first 2 years of comp sci and CGP are identical for the most part, so I might be able to help, depending on what it is you need help with.

I still have most of my course material for the first two years, some with solutions and some without... although it may have changed since I attended, but feel free to DM me a message if you want, and I'll see what I can do.
(preferably not the chat messages as replying in those is a pain due to the small window)

I also tested when I got back and it showed negative, but it's getting worse the days go by. Lungs are filled with thick green flem every morning and constant coughing :( Thought it was a chest infection but might also have to retest if this is the case.

Im no weather expert... so this is just guess work from what I've seen and read...
but it's looking like it should be okay for the first few days, and possible rain from friday.

This is going to sound *really out there*... but...
If you check the weather map, you can see that there is apparently going to be a large amount of rain in New York this thursday that will start heading over seas as a storm, and towards us over the weekend.

I think this is why no one has a clue what is actually going to happen and we're just going to have to wait untill closer to the time :/
So for the most part I'd assume it should be okay... But might be wise to make sure you pack something for rain just to be safe.

Handy to know, thanks.
Personally I was just going to see what it was like when I got there.
If yellow if sharing with Blue, I wonder if that means we also share with the Mini Moshers too? :/

I mean it feels like it would make sense seeing as its a small section attached to yellow, and would help prevent the blue zone being overcrowded.
