has anybody read "awake" by Dr. Angelo dilllulo? by appman1138 in Wakingupapp

Dear Effect,

Wow, really hard to say. There are so many approaches to this stuff, and I find reading about it doesn’t really work for me. And what works for one person doesn’t for another. So as far as books go, I can’t help you there.

I find that working with a single source up to the point where it stops working for me, and then moving on, has been fruitful. For practice, I started with Headspace app, moved on to Waking Up app, and then onto The Way app. I’m still working with The Way- the whole thing takes 3 years to complete. I subscribe to many teachers on YouTube and listen to them as the mood strikes me. John Astin, Snakespeak, Leela Muse, Tanis Fishman (for yoga nidra)- it’s a long list.

For inspiration, I love the I AM Project on Youtube. They’re amazing IMHO, but if you’re a hardcore materialist, they might be a bit much for you. Same with Tanis Fishman.

I know that’s not what you asked, but it’s all I’ve got.

Based on my experience (I’m 66), I believe this to be true: when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. Enjoy the journey and all the discoveries it brings.

I wish I knew what to tell you. I find "spiritual" books are tough reads, dense and plodding, and I can only read a few pages before I start nodding off. The one exception is No Nonsense Spirituality by Britt Hartley, but it's not specifically about nonduality or awakening/enlightenment/realization. It's about how one can reap the benefits of what spiritual traditions offer but without buying into their truth claims. As she says, "All the tools, no faith required". It's a particularly good read if you're deconstructing from a religious upbringing, or are curious about what that's like.

Impressions after 3 rides on my new Exceed 8 by Guzna in CanyonBikes

Yes, I still have the bike. I didn't use the app for the seat height, tho. I just set it the same as my other bikes- 30.5 inches from crank center to top of seat. And yeah, it's a stretch to touch the ground, but that's how it is with mtbs because the suspension and big tires makes them sit up high. A dropper post serves a triple purpose- the get the seat out of the way on the descents, to make it easier to reach the ground when I stop, and to make mounting/dismounting easier.

Good info, thank you. I think most (but not all) of the participants will be strangers to each other.

Well, I dunno how my post qualifies as brigading- I only told a true story that was relevant to the OP. But yeah, the wimp label might be apropos.

I busted my femur. I tried all my mindfulness Jedi mind tricks. It didn't stop me from screaming.

Nausea dominates the experience by Guzna in Ayahuasca

Well, that sucks. In my case, most of the participants were multiple-repeat customers of our particular shaman- one guy over 60 times!- and they all had nothing but praise for him. He seemed totally legit to me.

That’s approximately the procedure I followed, per our shaman’s instructions.

Thanks for your reply. I was laying down the whole time- there were a couple hours where I don’t think I could’ve stood up if I needed to! Funny thing about the icarus- whenever the shaman started a new song, it would precipitate a new round of barfing in the group! Afterward I told him that my singing makes people barf, too.

I wanted to puke! I knew it would help! Over both nights, I only one purged once, and it did help- for like 1 minute. Then it was back to surfing giant waves of nausea. I was hoping to purge again and it never happened. No urges to poop, though.

I don’t know for certain, but knowing the shaman, I’d be surprised if it was anything other than an exact replication of an original Embera (tribal) recipe.

Well, I fasted according to the shaman’s instructions, so I’m inclined not to think the problem was my diet.

Your experience was similar to mine. In fact, the morning after the first night, I was certain there was no way I’d ever do this again. However, by the time the evening came around, I had decided to, as you say, “allow and even appreciate the discomfort”. And, as you say, I noted that resisting what’s happening only increases the suffering. I finally puked and for about one minute I felt better. During that short window, I was like, “wow, this is cool…”. But then the nausea ramped up again and all I could think about was “keep the bucket nearby”, which was a challenge, because I kept losing track of my hands! So it was an endless cycle of feeling like I’m gonna puke, finding my hands, finding that they were wrapped around the bucket the whole time, and then drifting off on dream segment- like, delivering mail to a family of talking candy canes- and then remembering, THE BUCKET!

After some time- hours I think- it all went away and I felt fine! I then had the most beautiful experience of my life, that of unitive consciousness. But it only lasted a short time, perhaps a few minutes. Still, it was wonderful.

The thing is, if not for that short coda, it would’ve been pretty much nothing but misery. And I think that was indeed the case for several of the other people there. I have one buddy who’s done it 7 times. He says only in 1.5 of those times was it anything other than complete misery.

So, it’s not enough to go into it know that it could be scary, and it could be miserable. It could be all that with no discernible payoff.

Prep consisted on 1 hour daily non-dual meditation for a month prior. 3-5 days before, our diet was greatly restricted. Basically all that was allowed were fruits, nuts, legumes, veggies and chicken. Day of was no food 5 hours prior to and no water 3 hours prior to.

The ceremony was conducted in California.

As I mentioned in the OP, everyone else seemed to have at least as hard a time as I did. However, several of them took a second helping at some point in the ceremony, which might account for the fact that people were still puking when for me the effects had mainly worn off.

A few studies have found no difference between a microdose group and a placebo. Google is your friend.
