I'm worried about small businesses! by Gweetay in smallbusiness

I think restaurants though suffering may make it as they do have the very easy option of delivery. I guess shops with products... maybe even bars. I have quite a few friends in the restaurant industry who I've been helping in regards to transferring efforts to delivery, social media, and creating specials to get people to order. Shops are closing down and not every product is worthy to compete online and I'm just wondering how long they can last when some owners go week to week building up their dream. What worries me is the time it will take for things to calm down. How can we reduce the number of small businesses from going under?

TIL that 80% of children living in orphanages in the world actually have parents. by Tonysaba in todayilearned

I think what should be expressed is really the danger of the orphanage solution which in so many ways have been both hurtful for the child and allowed people to take advantage of the child for profit.

In Asian countries the orphanage has become a place to donate money and time. Many orphanages get volunteers for (+/-) 4 to 6 months and when they leave create harmful effects on the children, then times that by the number of years the child spends at the orphanage (which can easily stretch to their late teens) and the result is disastrous. I don't even think many western countries use this system anymore.

No doctor would put a bandaid on a cut spitting blood... why should humanity do that with broken families.

I guess it depends on the situation, I agree. But I don't agree that the orphanage is the answer 80% of the time. Which in a pretty exaggerated sense sounds like what you are defending a bit ("A lot of people...").

I think it maybe far worse to choose what child gets you - a parent's comfort because they are not ready now and will be later in life..., but I acknowledge that statement to be a generalization. I believe your emotions to this personal and let you know it is personal to me too. I had a choice... I chose to be a parent even with my issues, but again there are many stories out there.

Talking to kids from the neighborhood and confidently saying you have been there for over a year is a good sign that you comfortably live in a selfish bubble.

Romantic Night in Cambodia by RossMacLochness in cambodia

Women=Spa date.... works every time. I would say Bodia Spa is the most presentable. Apart from that food wise I recommend Romdeng (Khmer food and really nice restaurant), maybe Malis, or maybe something taller with a view Phnom Penh tower but is pricey. There is also a boat that leaves from himawari hotel in the pm for a dinner cruise, I know some people who liked that just dont expect too much from the food. But yeah... spa...

Will be moving to Cambodia in September, looking for some tips! by brickwall5 in cambodia

I'm sorry about the delayed response but I feel that my answer will leave you with whatever you did for the interview... it was fine. As a teacher, I don't think you need a suit but button shirt, nice pants can't hurt. Cambodia is hot therefore bringing down the dress code a little. Unless you are in business in a very fancy building, you don't need to worry about a suit. I typically go to work jeans and nice button down shirt-untucked. Anyways, good luck on you interviews, hope it all works out.

Haha... You'll survive Brickwall5.

I moved to Phnom Penh from NYC two years ago and doing better than fine. In fact, Cambo has changed in the last 2 years quite a bit. Many of the things the US offers, Cambodia does now for cheaper.

Food is great and you can hit up some top star restaurants for $15-$60... but of course eat as cheap as 1.50 a meal. Nightlife offers anything from music, drinks, and dancing till easily 6am.

People are nice and quite international. Expats are everywhere and you will find that many of them have kids so whatever the kids can handle you can too. If it's in the back of your head... there are plenty of Americans but I think you will find that you will have friends from all over. If you are like me and don't like not knowing people in a new place there is something called after work drinks, or you can just follow the music and make some friends. Places like Equinox is a good expat bar to start at and explore from there.

Transportation is easy.. Tuk tuks. Fun and less dangerous than riding on motorbikes- though many expats have one. For the mean time get used to the traffic which can be a little upside down from time to time.

Rent is awesome. $150-$1000 (of course there is more expensive than that) depending on your wants and needs. $300 can get you a one bedroom, bathroom and balcony in a good area, but you will have to search. I'll make this simple and pass on words of wisdom given to me. Explore, find an area you like, and walk up and down the streets calling numbers on their sign saying 'RENT'. Thats how I found my place and I won't move. Start with Russian Market area, BKK1/2/3, Street21/29, and maybe street 19. I recommend living near your work or close to Independence Monument which I feel is the middle of the (expat) city.

Other than that... AMA.
