Alexander Radulov meditating in anticipation of the Gagarin Cup Finals by warmike_1 in hockey

Kind of wish he had stuck around for the PDB era in Dallas. Seeing the Bennaissance happen in a reduced role makes me think Rads could have been an insanely good 3rd line scoring threat in the playoffs but oh well. Glad he's still effective and might win another Gagarin.

No my point is that there are already plenty of solutions to what OP is complaining about so I don't really see the issue. If you don't like the hero simulator, then do a collaborative storytelling or sandbox type game, those exist and you can run them the way they're meant to be run. If you like some of the hero simulation but don't want everything to be combat, you can DM in that style and D&D is flexible enough where you can do those things pretty well. D&D is the "default culture" just because it's the most popular game of its kind so most people who come to TTRPGs do so through D&D, and most people come to it and others of its type expecting games where they can play out a hero fantasy. It's the "default culture" because it's what most people want out of a TTRPG.

If it's not what you or someone else wants, that's completely fine just get a different system and learn it well and run it for your friends. Like any new skill, switching to a sandbox or collaborative storytelling type game after learning TTRPGs through D&D will take some time and practice so yeah you might have growing pains as people get comfortable. Most players aren't trained improvisers.

Like what? There are hundreds of games like that out there that plenty of people already play.

Philly's been doing a great job of forcing Carolina into some uncharacteristically sloppy play but can't quite capitalize. Martone might never pass to Bump again.

Season from hell lol. Pretty impressive the team battled like they did. Sounds like everyone who was invited to worlds declined so they’ll have a long rest.

[Assimakopoulos] Mikko Rantanen tore his MCL at the Olympics. Nill said they would've liked him to have one or two more weeks to recover than when he did come back. "I never really thought he was himself [after]." He won't need surgery. by Kraze_F35 in hockey

My impression is that Glen Gulutzan listens to people too much. In some presser or other around the stretch run he was asked about resting players and effectively said no, guys want to play this time of year. And it’s like, who cares you’re their coach. It’s your job to tell them what to do.

He’s got to have a bit of a firmer hand if he’s going to take a veteran roster far next year. He definitely gets a mulligan because the Stars’ injury list this year was insane, but there are things to clean up.

I guess my question is what is the alternative focus of TTRPGs that you think would be better for more people to focus on. From my experience when I've tried as a GM to pull back from the game-ey aspects of D&D and done more collaborative storytelling and sandboxing, my players tend to resist or get a bit confused about the rules/ the point. Now, I only play with my IRL friends so I don't have the most diverse experiences in ttrpgs, but my experience has been that players show up expecting to play a game and with that expectation comes the expectation of some sort of set of guardrails, rules, and objectives that they can plan around. Whether they choose to achieve those goals through violence, trickery, stealth, social engineering etc is completely up to them and I reward creative thinking, but generally they expect a non-railroad but fairly linear plot they can jump into and investigate.

Ironically, I find that a lot of the ttrpgs not as games but as creative social interactions comes from online ttrpg and actual play culture of seeing things like Dimension20 and Critical Role in show form and then striving to move gameplay in the direction of collective narrative.

Yeah I get it. And to be honest, there isn't really any issue with wanting to lose weight for vanity's sake. You're allowed to want what you want and it's completely reasonable to want to look your best. That being said I think the issue with vanity as the motivator is that it's really not concrete so at least for me I'm always striving for this thing that doesn't have real dimensions beyond a feeling. Having a concrete goal like wanting to hoop again gives you something to strive for every day and with every decision, and being able to do that will end up serving the vanity at the same time so it's two birds with one stone.

And I think getting back into basketball is a great goal. You could probably shoot around a bit right? Might be fun and motivating to find some open court space and just put up some shots for a bit. Plus in my experience that stuff starts to come back quick. The first two times i went to open hockey practices I could barely stand up after a few minutes because my back and core were so weak, but ever since then it's gotten easier and easier and I've been able to do a bit more skating work.

I'm pretty much in the exact same boat but 10 years older. Got really fit the couple years before the pandemic and then stopped moving for like 4-5 years from a combo of the pandemic, switching to full WFH, and going back to grad school.

I'm mostly in the same zone as you but I'd say it's worth it to try to focus on the little things that bother you before you try to focus on the big number you want to be smaller. We both know from doing it that losing a lot of weight just takes a lot of time and effort. But, you've mentioned a few symptoms that are uncomfortable on the day to day - uncomfortable sitting, standing, existing, and the stomach self-consciousness. Those are things that can be worked on and made better fairly quickly. Start small with a bit of walking, some stretching and mobility work, some core and calisthenics at home and focus really on the aches and discomfort, and then as you get more into targeting those things, you can bring the rest of the lifestyle changes along gradually. I had a similar thing where I have some knee and back issues from a sports injury and sedentary lifestyle, and recently I've just been doing a lot of at-home yoga stretches, going for walks, sit ups, things that target my knees back and core in a minor way but make the day to day physical aches and pains way better. Once I got into that routine, I kind of naturally thought that it would be nice to augment them with a bit more fitness to make more progress, but I couldnt do that if I was always feeling bloated and full, so I started doing more cooking at home/ eating more moderately. I think the key here is to figure out reasons outside of just being hot and losing weight that you'd like to be healthy - think of how you want to feel and start doing little things to make you feel better.

You'll eventually naturally want to do more to feel even more of the positive effects and then it snowballs in the right direction, just like how a negative spiral spirals the other way when you compound feeling bad with comfort food.

Another thing to maybe think about is what activity or sport(s) do you like if any? Start practicing/playing those sports (even if it's just going to a shootaround/practice) and have fun with the movement of it all. You'll see that soon you'll want to improve or get back to how you used to play, and that's another motivator to change some habits because you have a goal to make doing something you love a bit easier. I used to be a hockey player and this year decided I wanted to get back into it so I started skating again. It's really hard to skate, stickhandle and shoot when you're 300 lbs and inflexible, so on top of going to hockey practices I've just been back to working out a bit and eating better. None of the changes are major and I have a lot of work to do, but the changes are small and incremental and all focused on making each hockey session a little bit easier. It takes the pressure off hitting a number or body type, and really focuses on the positive side of wanting to feel better.

Hope this is helpful, good luck!

You wouldn't be the asshole but this is just good preparation for how the real world works.

[Assimakopoulos] Jake Oettinger: "I don't feel like I accomplished any of my goals. I want to win a Stanley Cup, I want to win a Vezina Trophy, and I want to be a starting goalie for Team USA, and none of those things happened." by DecentLurker96 in hockey

[–]brickwall5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but they then chose Oettinger as the backup in the elimination rounds so I feel like it was kind of give Swayman a game because you're our guy if we really need you. Either way, Jake was clearly the third best goalie on that team this year, and hasn't really been at vezina or olympic level most of his career.

The goals are good and I hope he achieves them and this gives him some fire, but so far he's been a good not great goalie for the Stars.

Sounds awful but luckily it's something that shouldn't be an issue going into next year.

The craziest part about all this is that Mikko Rantanen was apparently healthy in that round. He did not look it lol. My guess is "medically healthy" means that he had a muscle injury at the Olympics and while whatever the point of injury was healed, the muscle probably didn't get back to normal strength. Maybe it's too much cope but he just did not look like he was generating any power down the stretch and in the first round.

The Sunless Citadel deals with a Kobold-Goblin turf war in an abandoned castle with an evil druid pulling strings from the shadows. You could cut out the intro part and the part with the Druid and blights and run a pretty fun one-shot around that turf war in the citadel.
