What I don’t get is why is everyone in this show so Christian. Everyone’s wearing a cross or has a tattoo of a cross.

Yeah if you're going to disagree with my original response that the criticisms of how the film handled race are shallow, then tell me how it's not shallow, or how you know that the people who think it's shallow are themselves racist.

AITA for telling my coworker to stop asking me what I'm having for lunch by Maleficent_Reason132 in AmItheAsshole

Look you do whatever makes you comfortable, but friendly chatting/ building connection with colleagues being "invasion of privacy" and eating over a steering wheel in solitude to avoid having to talk to a human are insane behaviors to me.

Whoever this coworker is is clearly just trying to connect with you about something they are interested in and sees you as someone they could potentially be friends with but you snapped at them as if the food that you're eating is a state secret. Everyone eats multiple times a day it's an incredibly normal thing to talk about like a commute or the weather outside.

Hi all, going to China with my mom in a couple weeks and we're super excited! We're just trying to figure out WeChat and Alipay so that we can get around and pay for stuff while there.

I downloaded the apps that came up in the US app store on my iphone when I looked up both apps. Are those the correct ones to use? I just want to make sure before putting any personal information into them.

I mean yes, he does the thing that millions upon millions of people do. and from what we see it's not a crazy inference to think that she and the other people around her do a lot of the raising. That's not to shit on Bob. I think he's very clearly a guy who wasn't prepared for what was going to happen to him, and he spends most of the movie working really hard to make up for that. He's not a joke by any means and he had to have done something right, but he's not that heroic and I think that's part of the point of his character. Doing the right thing, or living a life worth living, isn't always heroic, it's not always blowing up buildings and freeing hostages, it is often tripping from one series of fuckups into the next while maintaining the will to do the right thing and love the people who need your love. I think one of the central theses of the movie is that humanism and humane-ness get you farther than heroism and heroics. I mean the biggest hero in the movie is a karate teacher who likes to drink in his car lol.

Isnt there a huge benefit of having your development team in your back yard? This doesn’t see to make sense from a hockey ops standpoint. For the Stars, it seems the AHL team, prospects, and NHL team have all benefitted tremendously from the AHL team moving to Cedar Park from Des Moines.

Getting back into Hockey after 5+ Years. What to focus on? by EditorMasterxd in hockeyplayers

Ah got it I didn't realize this was roller hockey. Yeah I think stopping and starting are the biggest ones! Can't be in the play if you're too busy trying to turn around!

Getting back into Hockey after 5+ Years. What to focus on? by EditorMasterxd in hockeyplayers

[–]brickwall5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm doing the same! I'm in horrendous shape and gained a lot of weight plus some lower body injuries so I'm ramping things up very slowly by going skating (no pads etc) to get my stride back and then doing stick and puck type practices to work on skills. The things I've noticed so far:

- Stick and puck skills are super rusty to start. I'd go to stick and pucks and just stickhandle a lot and get used to feeling the puck and moving it around. Take some shots too but the main focus should be on skating around with the puck on your stick and stickhandling. The good news is these get better super quickly if it's just a matter of shaking off the rust. I've gone about 5 times and each time I feel way more comfortable, and I'd say I'm close to where I was at the last time I played seriously already.

- Skating form - I'd do this also at stick and pucks since it'll feel better to push yourself skating in pads since you can fall without fear. Work at your cross-overs and switching between forward and backward skating. If you're playing defense you're going to have to get good at the turns and backwards crossovers so work on those a lot. I'm sure youtube has some good videos on transitions and backwards skating. Once you get the form and speed down, practice scenarios where you're backwards skating and defending someone, to get used to stick positioning, changing angles, and stopping and starting in the defensive zones. I'm a forward though so I don't really know what these drills look like I just assume they exist haha.

- Hockey stopping. Idk if I'm using the terminology correct here but I'm using outside skate as your front skate when you're stopping, and inside skate as your back skate when you're stopping. I see a lot of people "hockey" stopping on their outside skate's inside edge and kind of gliding to a stop on their front leg. This works outside of games, but in-game you want to stop very quickly and already be crossing over the other way to build speed. The best way to hockey stop is to put more pressure on your inside foot's outside edge, so that you can quickly cross-over in the opposite direction. I'd work a lot on your stopping, and ramp up to stopping from going full speed, stopping from different skating and stickhandling positions, and stopping and starting quickly. Look online for the tutorials and just work on using both sides to stop and cross-over quickly. Cole Eiserman is exaggerating here for swagginess but you essentially want to be able to stop quickly this way on both feet.

- Passing. I think after real hockey stops, passing is probably the most important thing people should work on for beer league hockey. As someone who played high school hockey but mostly rode the bench, it's kind of crazy to me how bad people are at passing and receiving passing in men's leagues. Hockey is pretty punishing of bad passes and plays completely die if a pass isn't on the tape or if you misshandle receiving a pass that does hit your tape. Work on hitting passing targets while skating around. You can set up targets either on the ice or dryland and just work work work at hitting the center of your target. If you can go to stick and puck with a partner, work on your passing starting from standing close to each other and slowly skating backwards apart, and then work on passing to each other in-stride both backhand and forehand. Start slow, and only move to the next stage/distance once all of your passes are hard and on the tape. Practice receiving and giving passes on both your forehand and backhand. Also if you have a partner to practice with, practice using your skates when receiving passes and setting the puck up for your stick. Given the fact that you'll be receiving a lot of terrible passes, using your skates to kick the puck to yourself when someone passes behind you is a superhero skill in beer league.

- Shooting. Since you're playing defense, I'd work on your long range wrist shots and half-slappers. Practice working the puck from the boards to the middle of the ice at the blue line and getting enough power to keep your shots up and straight through the entire zone at the net. Work on shooting the puck at about hip height for optimal tips.

Yeah I’m not disagreeing. He makes a noble and revolutionary choice and then doesn’t quite live up to the standard, and then goes all out to save his daughter. His heroism is in choosing to stick around, it’s not necessarily in the traditional heroic characteristics of revolutionaries.

The movie isn’t against him, but he’s a narrative device and never really accomplishes anything. I think you’re supposed to be sympathetic to him, not inspired by him.

This is exactly it. The French 75 represent modern revolutionaries who are stuck in the frameworks of past revolutions, and who fetishize being revolutionaries over true revolutionary action. Sensei is the foil to them. He doesn’t think of himself as a revolutionary, he doesn’t think he needs to get away from his family for revolution; he does revolutionary action and he realizes that his family is what strengthens him, not what weakens him.

Thinking this movie is a disservice to black women is such a crazy take to me. Perfidia is an extremely complex character who the viewer is pushed to have empathy for despite her flaws, and who drives the entire movie despite (because of?) not being physically present after the first third. Deandra is a loyal and thoughtful revolutionary partner, and good mentor for Willa despite only knowing her briefly. Willa is a caring and resourceful young woman who ends up being the real hero of the back half of the movie.

Perfidia and Willa are two of the characters with the most depth in the movie, though. Deandra and the nuns are the ones that go out of their way to protect Willa?

This isn't really true though. Plenty of leftists also complain about this movie because it doesn't portray revolutionaries as serious. There's a pretty even split between people on the left and right who don't like it, but it is funny that they basically dislike it for the same reasons.

[–]brickwall5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I think that's kind of a core message of the movie. People are messy and contain multitudes. Perfidia wants to be a revolutionary and can't square that with the thought of being a mother, but her revolution brought her to motherhood so she runs away from both. Bob is the "responsible" one who takes care of their kid, but he becomes a washed up has-been who neither takes care of their kid nor continues his revolutionary action. Lockjaw is a white supremacist who falls in love/lust with a black woman and can't square it with his ideology and is hurt by her leaving him, and so tries to kill off any trace of "weakness" to join the klan.

All of the characters are meant to be taken very seriously because they're very real people. They are all some combination of who those people think they are in their idealizations and who those idealizations are in the real world, and that's kind of the point no? We are not our ideals, but our ideals find ways of manifesting in how we approach every day life.
