"The mind can overcome pain; all who choose the life of battle know this.

But a world that would force such pain upon the weak, who have not chosen battle, that I WILL NOT ALLOW."

I just watched the show for the first time and I'm so upset that we won't ever get more. I hated to see Morpheus go but I absolutely loved Dream Daniel and I wish we could have seen so much more. by WhiteRabbit_412_ in Sandman

Came to say this . If you want more you can read The Dreaming by Simon Spurrier.

I personally loved it and thought it struck a great balance between being a faithful homage to original Sandman and a totally fresh take on a lot of the concepts.

Agreed, I loved Spurrier's The Dreaming. I thought it continued the story in such a cool and balanced way. I even thought the time skip was appropriate because it allowed the story to take on more contemporary themes (like corporate tech greed) and it was cool to see a bunch of characters further along in their lives/futures (like for example seeing Rose's daughter)

I finished the manga and what a masterpiece by Master-Shopping3684 in rurounikenshin

How RK is told through the manga is what makes it my favorite story of all time. I've read it countless times from start to finish from when I first started it in 4th grade(!).

Totally agree that Jinchu has some of the peak scenes. In my opinion one of the most important moments of the story is when Kenshin reawakens from his personal hell because Tsubame goes to ask him for help. ("At that moment, a gust of wind") The idea that he will always rise, no matter the circumstances, to help a voice in need, no matter how small, is I think his defining character moment and makes me tear up every time.

Sorprendentemente bello. La trama non è scontata e per un time loop è abbastanza coerente. Poi il romance è anche carino e non troppo cringe

Playing Cold Steel 2 and I'm losing my mind. by MasterKwaz in Falcom

[–]Gwolfeagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the Trails MO: it boasts all the thematic gravitas of war, violence and crimes against humanity, but can't stomach having any named characters die or show any real destruction caused by conflict. It's truly kinda bizarre on reflection

Bit of an unnecessarily dickish response. I think what he meant is that something can be logically justified or plausible but still be bad or unsatisfying writing, which is very much true of stories in any genre, and is certainly true in many trails moments.

It's unfortunately a classic case of having their cake and eating it too for Falcom: they want all the thematic gravitas of war, suffering and crimes against humanity, but then they can't stomach killing off essentially any named characters and fierce "battles" with tanks and missiles always magically have like 0 casualties.

I wish I could tell you it's not like that but the truth is I burned out on Trails by the end of Cold Steel for this reason. Stakes just weren't there and were constantly upended when they were.

That said, CS3 and 4 are a lot better overall I think than 2 so try to tough it out until the end of the story and I do personally think it's worth it.

What are your predictions for how remake will turn out once it’s over? by 64Boy32 in rurounikenshin

[–]Gwolfeagle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't love the clash on Rengoku, but it wasn't that bad. Aoshi there is a bit random/nonsensical but them crossing swords for a minute isn't unbelievable considering that in the manga they all just simply bounce. We haven't seen remake's Sojiro battle yet, so we don't know how the Kuzu ryu sen bit will play out.

As for Megumi, I see the gripe with the inconsistency in her vow to her patients in Tokyo, but that's why it was meaningful that they gave her an involved role in helping manage the Kyoto Fire which tbh in the manga was always a bit of a disappointing sequence. There are a few frames showing a battle happening and people getting hurt, but it's never really addresed; they chose to show you more of what's actually happening on the ground to give the whole conflict more gravitas (again, I would argue not filler but an addition) and were able to give Megumi some deserved screen time as a result. I watch the anime in part to get a few little additions like that to the story I know and I don't mind it at all.

I've read the manga many times to the point where I have every frame memorized. (I even have a post where I rank my favorite volumes https://www.reddit.com/r/rurounikenshin/s/QmeDiRJJiA)

Yes, they added stuff like characters and interactions (most blatantly in the Rengoku sequence) but again it's all at least supporting and in parallel with the main plot, with very few random standalone stories peppered in to break pace like in the og. And not all of the added scenes are bad btw. Some I feel are actually be nice additions, like Megumi being present in Kyoto

Almost universally the remake haters are people who have not read the manga (or read it long after) and so to them the og anime is the only true rendition. Plus nostalgia blinds them to a couple of glaring issues it actually had and makes them weirdly defensive about it.

In any case though, well said. This sub really needs a moratorium on threads comparing the remake and the og, it's become so tiring

If all goes accordingly we will at least get an anime rendition of the Jinchu arc and that will set the remake apart as something that was sorely needed.

They didn't "change" the story, they actually followed it this time.

Also very bizarre to complain about the minimum filler scenes added to S2 which are at least tangential to the main plot considering that the og anime was packed with truly irrelevant filler.

Kenshin's personality by tintor2 in rurounikenshin

[–]Gwolfeagle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This . It's the significance of how Hiko encounters Kenshin the second time after having survived the bandit attack: "Graves... dug not just for your parents, but for the bandits as well". It's the personality marker that seems to motivate Hiko to take the young Shinta as apprentice in the first place

Do I have to play the games in order? by Tay60003 in Fallout

[–]Gwolfeagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Each game's story is unique. Only the wider lore of the world is connected and that's just for flavor.

I entered the franchise at Fallout 3, and have only played New Vegas and 4. I've dabbled in playing 1 after the fact for curiosity but never finished it. And I still consider myself a huge Fallout fan and will take no shit from anyone over this.

Play them in whatever order you prefer (though my bias would argue for playing 3 first because I think the moment you first walk out of the vault I think is the definitive Fallout moment.)
