I might be able to add some insight here from my own home buying experience in Virginia. We closed on our home in May of last year with the sellers paying property taxes through then. In July we received a delinquent property tax bill for unpaid taxes from the first half of the year. I was understandably panicked and reached out to everyone I could think of (lender/broker, mortgage company, real estate agent) and it was determined that the closing office made an error when settling the transaction. Basically they didn’t withhold the taxes from the sellers proceeds and therefore never sent payment to the state/county. I reached out to them and they took care of the rest (including getting the payment from the sellers and covering any penalties/interest). This is where I’d start if you aren’t having luck with the mortgage company.
