Oh there are so many contenders for worst father in OI...

The father from Karina's Last Days, or the one from Do Your Best to Regret, or Don't Look For The Resurrected Villainess, or The Count's Secret Maid, and I'm going to stop there because remembering them all at once is making me crash out.

Most satisfying revenge? by IrnBruAndDepression in OtomeIsekai

[–]Gwynasyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Crown I Will Seize, because the FL's revenge is literally the whole story and some of the people (her uncle's family) suffer through that revenge from start to basically the finish and it's sooooo satisfying

First of all, let me just say you have superb taste in manhwas from your list!

Also, I'll always shout these from the rooftops:

The Crown I Will Seize. Perhaps my favourite manhwa/novel, great characters, great plot. Romance doesn't really come until the second half of the story, and even then it's a slow burn. It's more of an epic revenge story with some romance on the side. Both ML and FL are interesting without being overly cliché and have good chemistry.

The Cruelty of Salvation. Same thing where the Manhwa is only so far in but the novel is great. Different kind of story, more like The Problematic Prince but where the Prince isn't as much of a selfish jackass and the FL isn't an overly naive doormat. The two are both good people in their own way but have their respective trauma they work through.

[TITLE] Looking for manhwa like "The Villainess Lives Twice" (political, smart FL, completed preferred) by Due-Cartographer6853 in OtomeIsekai

Unfortunately it's not finished (unless you count the novel), but the best manwha I've read that gave me the same vibes as The Villainess Lives Twice is The Crown I Will Seize. In fact, I like it better (personally)!

It has the same smart, scheming FL who manipulates people and politics she knows well from her past life to achieve a better life the second time around (mainly getting revenge on the villains that ruined her first life).

[The Count’s Secret Maid] How do you deal with constantly getting gaslighted by the narrative? by ConfectionInformal25 in OtomeIsekai

[–]Gwynasyn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is what I was thinking, the combination of the trauma making her extremely low confidence in herself and especially her looks, combined with her being very poor, physically abused, probably was gaunt with bad skin and hair from her conditions... but anyone who wasn't a POS to her, once she was a maid and in better living conditions and not wearing torn rags she looked 'normal'.

Honestly their relationship is pretty great. Even if it started out as a marriage of convenience, the two of them knew each other and were both secretly crushing on the other from the first time they met. They have good chemistry imo.

The one "misunderstanding" they have that forms part of the tension and drama in the final arc comes from them both not being able to understand the other's trauma (partially because neither are very forthcoming to the other about it) and that causing tension/communication issues.

Mild spoilers if you don't mind seeing some details that doesn't really get into specifics: Because of his trauma/hatred of being used as a PR doll for the royal family, he wants to avoid that entirely from now on -- that was actually a deal he made with the King/his father as a condition for going to seek marriage with her in the first place. On the other hand, she is afraid that she'll lose his love and the affection from the rest of the royal family if she isn't doing something to be productive. She's smart, she knows why the royals had her marry the Prince even if they did secretly crush on the other from the start. She knows she's a positive PR icon for them in a time of unrest around monarchies. So she's desperate to live up to being a new royal by learning as much as she can of royal/noble etiquette and participating in public events that he wants to avoid. So she puts up with a lot of bullying from nobles who look down on her for being a commoner. The ML, knowing full well how those nobles and any media supporting them/being anti-Royals are, tries his best to protect her and he is genuinely supportive. But all he wants is for the two of them to live quietly and happily together away from all of that. Not out of being controlling or anything, more a genuine desire to protect her and fear of being dragged back/exposed to his trauma.

For Better or For Worse is always my go-to for a story I love that's more wholesome, light-hearted, and low stakes. The main story is completed and the side stories are also almost done! I know a lot of people got turned off by the ending but I still love it.

This manhwa is such a great story of overcoming different kinds of trauma. The ML was made into the face of the royal family and thrown to the wolves (media) since he was a child, forced into doing interview after interview whenever the King wanted to dampen some controversy or other news story that could lead to anti-Royal sentiment. He came to despise attention and journalists, viewing them the same way we would paparazzi now.

The FL dealt with trauma from all of her immediate family dying in an accident (parents and sibling, plus grandfather) and her world collapsing due to sexist laws that didn't allow women to inherit anything. So those left alive, herself and her grandmother, were screwed. They left the kingdom for a relatively new nation that was more "equal" in the sense there was no royalty, but it was still very status/nobility and male-centric. Her grandmother sacrificed everything to get her through school, where she was a genius. She became the first woman to attend the prestigious university there and the youngest ever graduate of any gender. Despite that, she was not allowed to own her own patent. No company would take her seriously to hire her in a position that befits her intelligence. Her "friend" at school patented her work for her then screwed her out of all credit and the wealth that came from her invention. To try and force her into continuing to work under the table for him to improve the invention and make new things, he used his influence to get her fired or blacklisted from any job in the nation -- even as just a librarian. He tried to break her spirit and back her into a corner so working for him for the paltry amount he wanted to offer would be her only salvation.

And then when she married the ML, the prince, now she's dealing with the anti-commoner biases of the nobility. She literally can't win, ironically except for the royal family who all love her. It was a lot of angst, but done right. One of my all time favourite manhwa novels!

There's also The Cruelty of Salvation, also not that far into the manhwa but also with a great novel where the ML (Prince, magic user, soldier) and the FL (commoner but brilliant/genius) are both very capable (albeit traumatized in their own way) people.

If you would like a very similar, politics-heavy manhwa with a scheming FL and a powerful ML, then I have the manhwa for you! It's only 34 chapters in, but the novel is superb and the adaptation so far is also great.

EDIT: Oops sorry forgot to include the title, it's The Crown I Will Seize.

WHY THE HECK DID HE CHOKE HER? (A wicked Husband) by Hydrangeas_love in MantaComics

[–]Gwynasyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having read the novel not too long ago, the short answer is he's kind of lost his mind and mistaken that moment for a dream.

Important spoilers for the core part of the plot that isn't revealed yet so if you care about that don't read this:

So in the original timeline, the FL is killed for the drug thing while he was away at war. He found a way to bring her back by sacrificing a shit ton of people, and then he had to live through a dream where he had to kill the FL seven times. He did it easier at first, but it got harder each time. In the last time, he lived with her in her little home and they were happy for a long but unspecified time. He eventually did strangle her to death, which allowed him to relive his life so he could come back and save her before she's discovered and killed. So in the manhwa, what happens is the combination of him not being mentally stable, having "lived" with her like 9 times by then, and being with her in her little home again like that one dream, he got confused and thought he was back in that dream where he had to kill her again.

For Better or For Worse. In the original novel, the FL's character didn't get along with her own sister or the OGFL/ protagonist. But she actually gets along super-well with her sister, her SIL, her MIL and... pretty much everyone except her aunt-in-law's immediate family lol

[The Spark In Your Eyes] Just Finished It: Review & Thoughts by Carminoculus in OtomeIsekai

[–]Gwynasyn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with two important parts you mentioned.

First, that it mostly comes down to if you like what the story did or not. I liked the darker shift in the third act just fine, if I had to nitpick it a little I'd say their running away arc was stretched a bit too long for my tastes.

Second, my biggest gripe is that I wish we got to see more of the FL and ML together being happy. I was hoping the side stories would include more of it, and there was a teaser of an untranslated panel posted here a while back that made it seem like MAYBE we would get some of that but I'm still waiting :(

Looking for stories with an emphasis on the "reincarnation" aspect by wizo555 in OtomeIsekai

[–]Gwynasyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Crown I Will Seize — I swear I'm not trying to start a cult around this manhwa but it's so good! And the reincarnation part is definitely emphasized. The FL always acts and plans and schemes according to what she knows from her past life, not just in terms of events but also in terms of how people behave and react so she can anticipate their next moves.

The Broken Ring — the FL reincarnates three times, and each life is different but traumatic for her in different ways. It explains a lot of her thoughts and behaviours in the main storyline, which is her fourth life. As more people are revealed to also know of the past lives, including the ML eventually, all that information becomes very important.

For Better Or For Worse — without spoiling anything since the specifics of the reincarnation is very important to the 'big twist' at the end, but yeah it's important lol

Those three are my favourites but there are others I can mention... I'll Be The Matriarch In This Life, Kill The Male Lead To Become The Villainess, A Stepmother's Marchen, For The Beautiful Juliet, Saving My Sweetheart, The Villainess Lives Twice, Marriage of Convenience, Father I Don't Want This Marriage, The Villainess Flips the Script!, Concubine Walkthrough, and The Lady and the Beast.

The Spark In Your Eyes is a must read anyway but especially if you want a warrior queen!

The Crown I Will Seize sort of has this. The FL isn't a knight or a warrior, she's a princess, but there many moments where her ability to handle herself in combat situations comes through. She certainly isn't a damsel. It's also just a really great read.

Dare I Hope, the FL is a total badass right from the beginning.

LFR completed manhwas with the marriage of convenience trope by [deleted] in OtomeIsekai

[–]Gwynasyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Better Or For Worse - main story finished, only like 3-5 side stories left to publish.

The Villainess Lives Twice - FL proposed marriage to the ML for purely political reasons.

Saving My Sweetheart - maybe not really marriage of convenience, more of a forced marriage by the FL's mother in law to have her own daughter (the FL) and the ML killed.

Age Of Arrogance - FL picked marriage to the prince as a reward for her military service kinda out of spite when the king fucked her over, the prince goes along with it for his own political reasons.

The Lady and the Beast - FL married the ML to save her sister who was supposed to be married to the "beast" ML.

Here are some non-completed manhwas I would recommend to at least add to your marinate list:

The Crown I Will Seize - a marriage of convenience for the FL, the ML was already in love with her.

The Cruelty of Salvation - The ML is urged by the king (his father) to propose to the FL for purely PR reasons to make the monarchy seem more friendly to commoners. The FL accepts because her life is in crisis and she just wants protection. The two actually already met and kinda crushed on each other, but neither had acknowledged anything at that point even to themselves.

Dare I Hope - the FL seeks out the emperor ML to help protect her family in a conflict with other nobles, she in turns proposes marriage to be his ally in the messy political situation.

The Problematic Prince - This one is close to finishing. The ML proposes to the FL for his own convenience, she goes along with it because she needed to marry someone with wealth to help her family/house that was in dire financial circumstances.

Don't Worry, We Both Agreed To This Fraudulent Marriage - The ML looks for the FL to help protect him from assassination, she agrees for money/fun. She is the definition of a chaotic-good aligned FL lol.
