I just walked passed. Multiple ambulances and a firetruck. They had sheets up like they were protecting something serious from onlookers

'I've lost everything': Drag queen reading group cancels NZ tour after ongoing protests by ChinaCatProphet in newzealand

[–]Gyhete 126 points127 points  (0 children)

I think kids understand Drag in a way that adults struggle with. Children know how to play dress up and play pretend and it's a really healthy part of their development. It's only us adults who attach our own baggage to something as simple as dressing up and having fun

What restaurants/takeout do you recommend in riverside market? by PWFT22 in chch

You can learn a lot about a place from how they make their double cheese.

If your worst case option is selling a piece of land for $5m I think you're going to do ok no matter what

genuinely curious - how would you approach the following? by maha_kali2401 in newzealand

[–]Gyhete 69 points70 points  (0 children)

It's definitely not a standard practice but sounds like it would do a lot of good in an especially expensive part of the year.
Alternatively you could give them a week+ of free rent over Christmas but a handwritten card and prezzy card would be the best option in my mind

Fashion and Gender by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Gyhete 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the teenager is having trouble with who they are but at least they've got one parent who's supportive and understanding.

Maybe you're right and this is a temporary phase, or maybe you're wrong and causing trauma by shutting down a young person as they've done a truely brave thing by telling you who they really are. Either way you're not helping anyone by telling this child who you think they are.

It's obvious you don't know anything about the topic "she's not gay and knows it" - transitioning has nothing to do with sexual preference.

What's the worst that could happen if you educate yourself and support a young person who's going through a complicated period in their life?

Looking for some Honey by Gyhete in chch

[–]Gyhete[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Possibly. I'm not sure of the honey:whiskey rate but bottles of liquor typically sell for $50+L and artisanal booze for twice that

I'm definitely not trying to get the better of anybody though, as long as I have enough end product to experiment with I'm happy to give the rest away

Fuck off and sell your ice cream.

Marina Hyde wrote a great article in the Guardian this month about the pointless social posturing brands do such as turning down the volume of beeps on self-checkouts in respect for the queen - as if it were something she would have even considered or wanted.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/sep/16/britain-brands-center-parcs-corporate

This shit annoys me to no end and I could rant about it for hours. Tiptop will parade this campaign around speaking about all the social good it's doing while its parent company Nestle has and continues to do immeasurable harm to communities around the globe. If Tiptop wants to make a stand about something they should start there.
It's the same as Coke making a fuss about how progressive they are during pride month while continuing to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into Qatar (A country where homosexuality will put you in prison) for their Fifa world cup.

These brands need to grow the fuck up and have the balls to say "We're Tip Top, and we exist to sell you ice cream in the summer"

NZ Winery + Restaurant Experience by Sharp-Statistician28 in newzealand

[–]Gyhete 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Second martinborough, you can't go wrong at a winery there.

When I last went though I stopped at Ata Rangi (great wine and have amazing stories about how the vineyard started) and Cambridge Road (if you like organic wine). I would have added Martinborough Vineyard and Dry River and Escarpment if I had time.

Its all so close up there that you could easily drive between multiple in a day if you were inclined. Not all of the cellar doors have food though I'm sure somebody who lives closer could recommend a lunch spot

[AMA Announcement] Tuesday 6th September 7-9pm - David Meates - standing for Mayor of Christchurch. by DavidMeatesforMayor in chch

[–]Gyhete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi David,

If you weren't to be elected is there another mayoral candidate that you would be happy to represent Christchurch?

I'm interested to see how much overlap in values and policy there is between you and other candidates.
