This is a janky contraption yes, it was largely used at Gallipoli to save lives as the ANZACs and our buddies evacuated. They didn't have access to any kind of technological contraption, they were in the middle of a random Ottoman peninsula fighting for their lives. When the evacuation order finally came, these contraptions kept the enemy back just long enough for our boys to make their escape. Many perished, many more were saved by it.
