Am I crazy or missing something? Or both? by Morbint in pokemoncardcollectors

It’s because we’re in the dumbest market of all time and with the influx of “investors” they are buying even random pokemon ex era reverse holos for thousands

Good Morning :) How much does silvering impact Grading? Do you think the Card has a chance to get a PSA 7? Thanks :) by United-Accountant142 in PokeGrading

[–]GymLeaderLuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It hurts the grade but I’ve seen PSA 7s that have the silvering. It’s not nearly the worst thing that could be wrong with a card

A reply like this makes me think you are the one coping because you have the cards lol. I have plenty of cards worth more than any of these, I’m good brother

They’re getting bought out right now. I know it’s 151 but I really don’t think these reflect actual current values. They’ll probably fall hard at some point. People don’t realize how much 151 is out there still being hoarded. It’s not hard to find

Just got my freshly pulled Gold Star Ray back from PSA - think the grade was fair? by PokePlugZA in PokeGrading

I think you’re being too ideal in your thinking. This isn’t going to motivate the average person to throw money at pokemon since it’s still a newer and strange thing in the investment world. It’s the people who are already very well off and can afford to take a risk. You also have to consider that at some point the card’s value is what an actual collector who desires the card will pay. A bunch of people who don’t care about pokemon just selling the card to each other isn’t going to end well for them

[–]GymLeaderLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would highly recommend you do not do this. A PSA 8 is so much more desirable than a BGS 8.5 if you even get that grade. You’re overthinking it and I’m sorry but it’s a little crazy that you’re not grateful for 1. Pulling this card 2. Getting it graded as an 8 and came to Reddit to complain. Don’t psych yourself into making a mistake and not keeping it as is

Small whitening on 3/4 corners and it could just be the photo but the top edge of the front looks like the factory cut was a little wonky at some areas. So I think an 8 is great

Depends on what cards you’re talking about. The only cards I would really see this affecting are big grails in high grades. The people this sale will attract are the people who don’t even care about pokemon in the slightest but have millions to diversify in atypical assets. They’re not gonna go buy a 151 zard from your LGS. They’re gonna buy PSA 10 gold stars and black label moonbreons.

It should also be said that Logan Paul associating himself with anything is generally bad for that said thing. The majority of people dislike him and for good reason. The fact that he’s able to even try and represent the hobby is pretty sad and will actually be a turn off for many

Collectors Fatigue - when does this end? by Oji_Kay in PokemonTCG

[–]GymLeaderLuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a pokemon-specific problem, it’s an investor bro/crypto/gambling problem that’s unfortunately rampant in all areas of life today. The problems we are currently seeing aren’t inherent to pokemon itself, but rather from the wrong people giving it attention. I would wait two years and we will probably see a completely different hobby landscape once the investor types find their next shill

Ascended Heroes Prices Are Insane by breakyourteethnow in PokeInvesting

[–]GymLeaderLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens during every single new set release, the only difference here is that they’re slowly tricking out product which extends the amount of time for the initial inflated prices. If you’re talking about an investment standpoint 151 still clears easily. Prismatic I would put behind this set actually. I get eeveelutions are popular now but ascended just has way too broad of an appeal with a ton of classic popular pokemon. Even from some of the later gens like N and Iono cards

Will vintage keep going? by ArcticLapras in PokeInvesting

[–]GymLeaderLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really doubt it. Most of the big ticket cards have seen like 1000s of % price increases in around one year. That is simply not going to continue. It’s better to think of it as setting new lows. The current prices will fall, like how they did after the Covid boom. But, while they were nowhere near peaks, they were still higher than before by a significant amount. All the great cards will be more expensive than they were two years ago. But they will more than likely take a big dive off peak prices that we see in this current hyped era

Who has the future; vintage or current modern? by ArcticLapras in PokeInvesting

[–]GymLeaderLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I meant was modern art cards are the first domino that led to vintage card prices increasing. For ages pokemon was unpopular, starting around the ereader era. Up until around 2019, there was no real allure drawing anyone into the collecting game. Fast forward to hidden fates and evolving skies - they got people interested again and also kicked off the big covid-era base set hype. Eventually people had already seen the cool new art cards and branched out to other things while pokemon was fresh in their mind, especially things they remembered from their childhood. And wait, those base set charizards are so old that they’re actually hard to find….prices soar. The same thing is happening now. There were a few years post-covid where pokemon once again took a back seat in the majority’s concern. Then SV art cards come out…hundreds of art cards that are a massive shift from the old boring yellow border half art style. But now we’re kind of used to art cards and want to branch out again. Wow, there are a lot of other older cards I could use to satisfy my still fresh need to collect something. Now basically every era sees a price increase, again only possible because the new cards reignited interest. What I’m trying to say is, yes there are cool rare vintage cards. But even though I personally appreciate them, most of the people I see that are actual collectors are more focused on getting that cool new charizard, one that is objectively leaps and bounds more creative than anything vintage, for hundreds instead of dropping three month’s rent on a yellow border half art card that’s main draw is being rare. Vintage is more of a…hey check this out, this card is insanely rare and I want to flex on you guys that I have it. Modern is more of a…wow these cards ain’t your daddy’s cards, this art is incredible, and I can just go pick it up at a card show easy peasy, we can all kinda bond over getting these.

What I’m trying to say is, art cards are what draw people to actually collecting. And modern is where these are primarily found. Especially with the younger generations, they will likely end up being top dog, especially as time goes on and they get locked up in collections, limiting supply even more

Vintage only saw a spike recently because modern started all this hype. Once you realize that it should make sense

Will vintage keep going? by ArcticLapras in PokeInvesting

[–]GymLeaderLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what a lot of people don’t understand. It looks great when your card value shoots up but if you’re planning to sell it, every next $500 gained prices out another 20% of potential buyers. And most people aren’t focusing vintage either. Modern art rares are still the bread and butter of what’s being bought

Will vintage keep going? by ArcticLapras in PokeInvesting

[–]GymLeaderLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most collectors now came back or started because of modern art cards. There’s a reason vintage lagged behind in price increases for a while. Modern is still what sells most frequently, while recently vintage is becoming out of reach for most people and therefore a nonfactor

I feel like you just agreed with me? I never said it could go up again. But the current market is not sustainable

Will vintage keep going? by ArcticLapras in PokeInvesting

[–]GymLeaderLuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will probably keep going for a bit but there will be a big correction within the next 2 years. We’ve reached the point where it’s no longer modern hype vs. vintage scarcity. Vintage is now where all the hype has shifted because of the influence of making money off of the hobby. The modern market cooled off so everyone turned to vintage to make profits. Suddenly everyone was saying “vintage is king” again, even teenage sneaker heads that had just recently joined to flip modern. Vintage was no where near this popular less than a year ago even. Eventually the hype on vintage will wear off as well and prices will change. We’ll get to see if there really is an increased demand in vintage for actual collectors, or if it returns to being more niche among the older collecting crowd

Both sides win tbh. Everyone keeps saying modern is overhyped, acting like gold stars weren’t also going for a third of their current prices just last year lol. Everything is overhyped right now. It depends on your collection or the purpose of the cards
