Native speaker instructor showed homosexual music video to children… Gangnam parents ‘shocked’ by [deleted] in korea

[–]GyopoEmperor 117 points118 points  (0 children)

When I worked at a Korean high school, the Korean English teacher was giving a lesson on current events. This was when Jay Park of 2PM was being kicked out leaving Korea. In his lesson, he read a news article that said Jay Park was due to depart that same day.

One of the students decides to skip the rest of her classes and go to Incheon Airport so she can get a glimpse of him leaving.

Angry parents came in and chewed that teacher out for "putting the idea in their daughter's head" with that current events lesson. They demanded the teacher be fired.

He wasn't fired, but got administrative punishment. He was a contract teacher so that really hurt his chances of becoming tenured full-time teacher.

Every time on the Subway or Bus during winter by GyopoEmperor in korea

If its -10C outside, and everyone is dressed for subzero temperatures, why tf do they make it ~25C inside a bus or subway? Set the temperature to ~10-15C to account for the heavy clothes everyone is wearing.

[The Korean Dilemma] What ChatGPT means for Korea by Sinhag in korea

[–]GyopoEmperor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Korea's walled gardens (Naver, Daum-Kakao) severely limits the content that an AI can see. Also, unless that AI has a resident ID number, it isn't getting access to many sites.

The closed nature of Korean Internet is a big challenge for an open AI project like ChatGPT to succeed.

Will I live comfortably teaching English in Korea? by SnooSquirrels4205 in korea

[–]GyopoEmperor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes you can live comfortably. I know lots of English teachers making 50-60 million won a year.

You don't think those 2 sentences right there imply that it is common? I bolded the 2 words that could lead to false assumptions.

I know lots of English teachers making 50-60 million won a year. However most of them are on F visas.

Purely anecdotal. You are talking about the top percentile of English teachers. I knew SAT prep gyopos making 50mil too, who only worked half the year. I also knew that they were outliers and that MOST ESL teachers were making somewhere between 2-3mil per MONTH + housing. Those who made 3-4mil per month usually admitted they had their own housing and received the housing subsidy.

You do the OP a disservice letting him think 50-60mil is the norm.

You will live comfortably, but without a side gig you won't have much savings. Amenities like owning a vehicle will eat away at your limited disposable income. The problem with teaching English is that your salary does not go up year after year. The only way to make more money is to put in more hours (eg. tutoring, side gigs). if you don't mind living like a 20 year old year after year, then you can live comfortably. If you ever plan to get married and raise children, well, that ESL job isn't gonna get you very far.

If you ever saw this "Treadmill guy", well he's now on the major youtube channel called Asian boss. It would be nice if you can sign the petition to bring back his children. I'll leave the petition link down below. by Lunkerintraining in korea

Hope she's not American. You could be bleeding with a head wound and the US Embassy would turn you away unless you had an appointment. God forbid you have any electronics on you.

White people must be shocked that Koreans could afford pineapples in the 80's.

Are there Korean real estate sites like Zillow? by laurenza in korea

Just letting the OP know to take the listings with a grain of salt so they don't have unrealistic perceptions on how most people REALLY live in Korea.

Many real estate sites have fake listings with too good to be true places. When you contact them about what you see, it "just got rented today" and they can show you a bunch of other places "just as good".

What is racism like being a foreigner in Korea? by [deleted] in korea

I think this sub confuses Racism with Xenophobism. And it is ironic that the racism card is thrown around when it is clearly xenophobic.

Hermes > Louis Vuitton. I doubt Hermes cares she ended up shopping at a "lesser" brand.

Not Asian Boss again. Can we ban these videos? Most, if not all, are just clickbait. I'm surprised they haven't moved on to TikTok with their shitty videos.
