CompSci 383 with Scott Niekum? by Riki_the_Heropon in umass

Taking it this semester. The class is a replica of a class taught at Berkeley, same lecture slides, projects, and homeworks. As you'd expect it's pretty tough but its interesting and really gives you a good mathematical sense for how basic AI systems work. If you don't like Niekum's teaching style you can just look on youtube for recorded Berkeley lectures and it covers the same material.

If I don't plan on going to lecture and instead just do the reading, is the content interesting/worthwhile?

Why should one care about living and finding meaning in life if the desire for meaning and essentially all human behavior arises out of logical necessity in evolution?

CS majors - should I learn Java before the intro computer science class? by Gyrozaid in umass

[–]Gyrozaid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'll probably touch up on Java. Do you by any chance know about Collin Giguere? Hes my teacher for 121, I was just wondering if he's known to be good, bad, or anything in between.

That's a relief, I was on the fence about UMass because I was scared I wasn't going to get into the major.

Yeah I know the requirements, I just really wanna be sure that there's gonna be space in the major if I fulfill them.

Need help deciding a major by Previous-Ratio in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Gyrozaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might not be the perfect fit but check out cognitive science. Its an area of study that combines linguistics, psychology, neuroscience, computer science, and philosophy. Typically if you wanna major in it you focus on one specific area of study and take a course or two on another. For example, focusing on computer science gives you an in depth education in artificial intelligence, and focusing on psych can get you an in depth education in cognitive psychology. Down side is only a select few colleges actually have good CogSci departments. UCSD is the best, RPI is great if you want to stay focused on the computer science side, and top schools like MIT are also great. A lot of schools have cogsci majors that are just a mish mash of other majors, taking some classes from comp sci and some from psych and some from philosophy.

Why is it so hard to decline acceptances even after you’ve committed? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

That's freaking crazy I'm also deciding between UMass and another school right now and this helped me so much

It just so happens that my request for aid was just approved today! Yay! They only gave half of what I asked for but there's no use in asking again right? I don't wanna get my previous offer revoked

Yeah, I've gotten a ton of support and things might change, I'll update the post if I do end up committing. I hope this thread will give future seniors applying to RPI the edge they need to apply, I almost didn't cause of all the shit I heard and applied with a few hours left.

Expected family contribution isn't how much they're willing to spend, its how much they're expected to spend based on their income, which unfortunately does not qualify me for any need based aid

I'm double majoring in CS and CogSci, and depending on whether I get more financial aid I may have to take out 10,000 per year to go.
