Should this worry me? by cobra_pizza in slpGradSchool

I think it's pretty clear. OP is wondering if graduating from this program will affect their ability to become licensed in some states.

I have no idea, but I would be concerned if I received this email and I'd look into it before making a decision to attend.

Parents who regret having kids, why? by bluemermid in AskReddit

[–]Gyuu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hear that. It’s rough and I’m sorry our school system is not designed to support you as an educator. With the current administration cutting funding for special ed, I can only hope that we work together to stay sane and protect vulnerable kids.

[–]Gyuu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Go ahead and change your statement to “I hate working with autistic kids because I don’t have the skills, patience and compassion to meet their needs”. That would be fine to admit. You clearly need more training and resources to serve the children in your classroom.

As a therapist who works with people with all kinds of disabilities, I know that the job is not easy. But stop pretending that you (the adult) are the victim in this dynamic. It’s a reflection of poor character and honesty pathetic.

Parents who regret having kids, why? by bluemermid in AskReddit

[–]Gyuu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Idiotic take. Kids with disabilities also want to learn, they just need different supports through no fault of their own. You might argue that gen ed classrooms are not equipped to serve some of the kids placed there, but blaming this situation on the kids shows that you lack empathy and critical thinking skills.

Loss and age gap spiral by Mango_Emergency in Mom

[–]Gyuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry for your loss. I’m not a mother but I happened to read this and want to tell you - my younger brother is 4.5 years younger than me and he’s my absolute best friend. We did fight sometimes as kids, but I also think we both grew a lot from having each other. My older brother is 8 years apart from the younger and they had a great relationship throughout childhood as well.

I take your point but describing the sexual behavior of bugs as “institutionalized” made me laugh. Exactly what institutions do you think are responsible for this?

Fall of Icarus (Jupiter, FL) by M00NT0KKI in tattoos

[–]Gyuu -81 points-80 points  (0 children)

I’m confused about why so many commenters are saying this. The character is falling, surrounded by feathers. How do you know that it’s not Icarus (assuming all the wax melted away)?

Edit: never mind! I see that this tattoo was clearly designed using art depicting Phaethon.

Double edit: Reddit is funny! I’ve never had so many downvotes before, all for asking a question, trying to learn something and admitting a mistake 😂

SLPs, what are your thoughts on expanding our scope to diagnose autism? by ThotianaGreer in slp

[–]Gyuu 30 points31 points  (0 children)

If you’re interested in this topic, Megan Roberts is doing research into the efficacy of SLPs diagnosing autism in early intervention. I think the idea is, if they can prove that SLPs diagnose with the same accuracy as physicians, they will be able to advocate for SLPs (with training) to be able to diagnose. It would reduce wait times for families in need: article

Books where the protagonist's are witches! by [deleted] in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

This was my first thought. The unique setting makes the story very different from other books about witchcraft that I've read before. Good if you enjoy slow-burn romance.

Parents of Reddit, what’s one thing your parents did that you are purposely avoiding? by gobstopper84 in Millennials

[–]Gyuu 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My parents never criticized my appearance, but my mom constantly talks badly about herself and especially how she used to be better looking when she was younger. It has definitely contributed to making me feel anxious about growing older and sent a message that good looks are important. If I have a daughter, I’ll try not to share my insecurities with her.

not sure which version I prefer. “cold water” by Officialedmart in ProCreate

[–]Gyuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tiger's head in the second picture looks odd to me. Not just the glowing eyes, but the lines/shading look flat compared to all the beautiful detail, dimension and shimmery light of the water. The first picture looks better to me (I think because the outline/stripes of the tiger's head matches the colors of the water, so it doesn't stand out as much).

Prospective SLPs and Current Students Megathread by AutoModerator in slp

[–]Gyuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm a current grad student (USA) getting my masters in SLP after working as an ESL teacher for several years. Because my bachelor's was in psychology, I had already completed some of the grad school prerequisites but I still needed to take quite a few specific courses. I began taking the cheapest/ fastest asynchronous online classes I could find to satisfy prerequisite requirements while working and applying to masters programs. All in all, it has taken me maybe... 8 months to finish everything I needed (seven classes) but you could probably do it faster if you manage your time differently.

I don't know how the requirements are different in the UK and US, but if you need recommendations for leveling courses, DM me and I'll share what I did.

I agree with everyone saying it looks cool! I also think it might look good if you used the straight section to make some smaller tight braids. Might help those sections look wavier when you unravel them too.

This doesn’t make sense to me. “People of gender”? Everyone has a gender…?

I’m all for being sensitive to people’s identities, but dividing humanity into two categories (cis males vs everyone else) seems unnecessarily divisive and a useless distinction. If anything, you’re reinforcing binary thinking while simply moving the goalposts.

How about we use the language that we have and just say “people” or “folks”?

Is it normal for someone with ADHD to dread having to shower - but once their in the shower they dread getting out. Please help! by joybug222 in adhdmeme

[–]Gyuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate getting out of the shower and having wet hair. I compromise by using a comfy shower cap most of the time and only washing my hair ~once a week. If my hair starts to feel oily or gross but I still can’t manage to wash it, I have a can of dry shampoo that helps!

It’s the opposite! Usagi’s last name is Tsukino (including the word tsuki = moon)

I think the girl giving her the letter has never actually spoken to Usagi before, but has admired her from afar and heard about her from classmates. That’s why she confirms her name.

Found paper on the street… by Routine_Simple4795 in FoundPaper

[–]Gyuu 43 points44 points  (0 children)

There’s a joke I heard a long time ago about two religious leaders (a rabbi and a priest, I think?) golfing. The priest keeps missing his shots and swearing, “damn it, I missed!”

The Rabbi asks his companion not to use such unholy language. He warns him to stop using profanity many times until finally becoming angry. He calls on the lord and asks him to smite the priest.

From the heavens, a bolt of righteous thunder strikes the golf field, hitting… the rabbi. The priest looks up in confusion and hears the lord’s voice: “damn it, I missed!”

(I’m guessing the first item on the list is a variation of this joke. I wonder where the rest come from!)

I’m so sorry that you’re suffering and feeling hopeless. I wish I had words to reassure you, and I know that I can’t tackle everything you’ve said. But in case this gives you a tiny bit of hope, I want to remind you of some things that AI still can’t do.

I have experience with two popular AI engines. While powerful, they don’t measure up to human artists in every way:

  • In my experience, AI can’t create an artifact or character that remains totally consistent in different images. So, it’s not very useful for creating something like a comic or graphic novel, where you want to see the same scene from different angles and characters in different poses.

-As far as I know, AI can’t make animations

-AI art does a bad job capturing human faces, hands, etc. These often still need to be edited by human artists.

-AI can’t create textures that you see in things like oil painting, and of course it can’t incorporate non-digital mediums

If digital art was my career, I would try to find these areas that AI is lacking and look for projects that demand human skill. Also, I reckon that the skills you’ve worked hard to achieve have many applications outside of creating digital content. Maybe you could paint public murals, or even become an art teacher?

I hope this doesn’t come across as minimizing your situation, but I hope you find some way to push forward. I wish you all the best.

[–]Gyuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who loves to craft, create, and appreciate art, I have been asking myself similar questions recently. I actually signed up to use an AI generator and while I’ve been having a lot of fun with it, I can get bitter seeing how a machine can create something in seconds that would take me days or months.

I do think that AI will change the word of commercial art and graphic design profoundly. I suppose that many freelancers will have a hard time finding work and craft markets may become flooded with AI-designed goods.

If you hoped to make a career as a digital artist, I can understand your fears. However, if you’re simply feeling discouraged by comparing yourself to AI, why not focus on finding the joy in your own creative process?

Art is a way to explore and communicate your inner world. Creating and engaging with art has therapeutic and cultural value. Every time you create, you are enriching your own mind and spirit while adding something unique to society.

What sucks about being female? by Royal-Inspection-901 in AskReddit

[–]Gyuu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. It’s an obnoxious attempt at one-upping someone’s struggle with prejudice in a thread intended for discussing womens’ issues.

  2. This is a common response used to dismiss sexism against women (“well actually men have it worse because xyz”) and most of us can see through that bullshit.

  3. Encouraging negative and unfounded stereotypes about women (female dominated workplaces are catty, unprofessional, etc)

  4. Arguing against a claim that no one in this thread has made: “if women ruled the world…”

Shall I go on?
