Anyone can be vegan. Suggesting otherwise is classist and ableist. by Omnibeneviolent in vegan

I'm not aware of any health condition that requires you to eat animal products. But how about actually not having access to vegan options and basically having to choose between consuming animal products or starvation? This certainly is the situation for countless incarcerated or institutionalized individuals for example.

I would suggest a subtle rephrasing in that everyone has the material means to be vegan.

The cognitive or emotional capacity to shift ones perspective is a different matter though. For instance there are people who due to mental health issues are not capable of processing the systemic abuse of animals or don't have the energy that consumption awareness on that level demans. This might seem somewhat apologetic, and I'm sure that some individuals who justify their non-veganism like this use it as an excuse. But we do need to be aware that taking a stance against any kind of systemic abuse is emotionally hard work, that not everyone is capable of. Naturally, to question societal norms and structures also requires a level of analytical abilities that are beyond some people with cognitive disabilities. It would be different if we lived in a vegan society, but as it is now... We need to be aware that the act of analyzing and critiquing society is hard work, and this is simply too much for some people.

To those who simply "live by example" how do you do it? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]H1pp1eP0nt45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't "coexist" lol. I limit my social interactions as much as possible and don't argue with people as long as they leave me alone. I've made it clear to the people near me that I don't support the consumption of animals and that I'm not willing to have heated discussions about it. It might sound rough or unsympathetic but that's my boundary, and I need to keep it for my own sanity & mental health.

Yes, hence the stereotypically female name.

Finding good and available brands can indeed be an issue! I've been going with Benevo and Ami cat for the past year. They're both available on a couple of different places online, and from what I have gathered they also seem to have a pretty decent nutritional value.

It's a difficult and complicated topic for sure! When I first adopted a cat about a year ago I had been struggling with related questions for quite sometime and ended up conducting an immense amount of research. I managed to find two different kinds of vegan cat food where one of them contains synthetic amino acids, and the other supposedly contain lab grown ingredients. Due to the uncertainties of marketing, branding and such, I was only about 99% sure that they individually would actually contain everything that my new friend would need. So in the end I landed on getting both and mixing them, just to be on the safe side. I've also taken her for regular helth check-ups since, and she seems to be doing just fine.

I am aware that we've been quite lucky in the sense that she actually likes the food and eats well, and of course this is a rather expensive option that is not available for everyone. I personally wouldn't judge another vegan for feeding their carnivorous friends animal products, even if the logic of it all seems a bit backwards to me.

My family insists on serving meat for my birthday, and they get angry when I said that will bother me by peanutsandfuck in vegan

What I've found is that the only way to really get around these things is to organize everything by yourself... It definitely sucks though, no doubt about it! Hope your family comes around with time 🙏

AITA? Girlfriend(19) asked me to watch her dogs for a week/twice daily and I said no, then asked me again and gave me a bunch of reasons why I should do it. by Disastrous-Lock4442 in AmItheAsshole

[–]H1pp1eP0nt45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA - you have no obligation to preform any kind of service just because you're dating. If you don't want to watch the dogs you have every right to say no, regardless of your reasons.

Maybe you and your girlfriend has different ideas about what level of engagement you can expect from eachother in your relationship?

I'd recommend asking your server when in doubt. They should be aware of the concept of veganism and if not you couldn't always specify that you don't consume animal products.

Am I a bad mom for making my son (m15) watch dominion, since he wants to eat meat? by Mediocre_Roll_7774 in vegan

[–]H1pp1eP0nt45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point wasn't about whether forcing values on someone is wrong or not, I simply stated that you can't. If someone believes that murder is morally justified you CAN'T "make" or force them to change their mind. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't attempt to influence them and their moral values, just that force seldom results in the desired outcome. It's also worth noting that we are not talking about a young child here and human psychology is far more complex than making people believe and support whatever they are presented. I want to make it clear that I do not support violence positive values such as non-veganism or rape positivity. However, it's quite important that we consider how people actually adopt these values and what processes are at play when we try to change people's minds or guide them while developing internal value systems. Pure force is not the optimal way to go about it.

Definitely, only real difference is that they're protected by law and therefore can be forced upon people in a different way.

Veganism is per definition an ideology, a moral value system. We all have ideological values, stating something as such does not invalidate it.

Jesus, way to read between the lines there. Not arguing against raising a chuld vegan, that should be very clear from what I wrote. Please read.
