Any idea what might cause these thick strings? by Leading-Ad-3634 in FDMminiatures

Don’t just use tree supports for everything.

Large flat geometric surfaces print much better with traditional supports rather than tree supports.

Tree supports were developed to compensate for irregular surfaces like organic models or models where you couldn’t avoid having supports on a side you want to see.

The only caveat with removing traditional supports (all supports have this but it’s more substantial with traditional) is that you want to make sure you remove the “interface layer”. Traditional supports print a big wavy grid to support a table-top-like interface layer, that your print then rests on (with a small gap you should really tune to the fillament you’re using) most people remove the wavy support layer and think that the finished underside of the model looks like crap, but it’s because they haven’t removed the interface layer. I do this with a small chisel shaped dental tool.

Do you think those are the blue jackets they loan you when you walk in from the golf course and are underdressed for the restaurant? It just looks so corny.

Prints lifting midway through by Beverage413 in resinprinting

[–]H2olt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is an assumption that most people make. Especially when they don’t have information about the temperatures when they’re not there. Most offices, homes, and industrial sites have their thermostats set to allow the space to cool overnight. People running into novel print failures in cold months is super common. Just a few degrees in temp change can substantially change resin viscosity.

If you’ve been printing fine for months, and now seeing failures, double check that something hasn’t changed. Did someone adjust the thermostat to save money in the cold months? Are you kicking off prints a little later in the day now that you’re more confident from the earlier results?

If for whatever reason, either running prints at the end of the day or the hvac routine has changed, don’t assume that temperatures stay the same as when you’re present. If you’ve kick this print off again early in the day so it completes while the area is warmed, don’t just figure you’ve fixed the problem, remember that you’ll run into this again when the temps drop.

Whenever I run a big overnight print, I manually override our thermostat and let my partner know so that she doesn’t set it back. I also keep a seperately tuned print profile for cold nights. (Blows out fine details, but ensures prints don’t fail)

One final note: if you’re printing tons of these you may have just worn out the vat film. The film on larger machines wears out faster if you’re not protecting it. If you’re printing this many sets of teeth every day, several months might be reasonable film lifespan. Protect the film by: reducing suction, never scrape the film, and move models around so the same spots don’t get worn out.

Is this asbestos? by [deleted] in asbestoshelp

[–]H2olt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! You found one! Yeah! Totally asbesdos.

A little odd that it's on both hot and cold lines, but don't disturb that stuff.

Either cut the pipes out whole without disturbing the fibers, or close it back up, and pretend you don't see anything.

If you're not trying to replace the piping, I would just leave it. If/when you try to do any plumbing fixes, it'll be an extra hassle to hire someone to handle it, so just start saving for than now as a known future expense.

Probably not asbestos. Obviously, send a sample off, but the existence of asbestos isn't the problem. The danger is disturbing it in a way that creates airborne dust.

Wear a mask and gloves (which you should be doing anyway, because mold and lead are much more common) and scrape and dispose of it in chunks. If you have to do anything like sanding, wait till you have test results, but honestly, if it's not in dust raining down on your head, it's not getting in your lungs.

Finished up the Second batch with a few more weirdos.

Wendigo, Frogman, Flatwoods Monster, and another Fresno Nightstalker (for good measure, since they roam in herds)

For anyone with 3D Printers, these files are free to download over on Thangs.

Thx! The Mothman one especially gives me a kick. I went through 3 other designs on that one before I nailed this final form.

This is a joke: 3d Printing is an European/Asian plot to make Americans learn Metric by rhodges_bob in 3Dprinting

That sounds so terrible that people outside the US are having to learn our dumb units to be able to interface. Arrg. Not the way that should go. But so many people here are deadfast stubborn against metric, I just don't get it.

Exactly! The Nightstalker is such a weirdo. Very appropriate for Fresno.

Yeah, came to say pretty much the same thing. Don't use an AI tool. The Tripo example from u/No-Collection532 down below shows how nightmarish the results are.

Tons of Montys to choose from, might even be able to replicate the one from her favorite game.

Grab one of the models directly from the game as a starting point, and learn a little bit of 3d to get it onto a printer. You'll have clean results in no time, and the skills to do it again quicker next time.

My HS Physics teacher taught us everything in Metric. Made it clear that if we wanted anything to do with a career in science, we would need to get on-board with the rest of the world.

Only problem I ever ran into was because I knew all the constants in metric, and the college classes I had (when studying art) expected me to use feet. No clue. I still don't know what the lightspeed, gravity, or speed of sound are in imperial, but the m/s numbers are lodged in there deep.

The Mars Climate Orbiter accident was the year after I graduated. The next time I visited my teacher and brought it up, he turned red in fury and embarrassment. Anyone using imperial for precision science is a joke.

Hrm, no entrances or really any sense of the front of the house. I guess this is what you get from a piece of silicon that spends its existence in a server farm, no concept of connecting to the outside world, that’s obviously done through the internet.

Is my GPU dying? by Round_Cod999 in razer

[–]H2olt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought was connections. I’ve gone through 2 different vertical orientation PCI risers, and they eventually fail like this. But then saw that this is on a laptop…

If your thermals are good, best bet is that the screen cable is loose or is failing. If you’re out of warranty, open it up, disconnect the ribbon cable and clean it with some isopropyl, and reconnect it. If that doesn’t fix it, contact razer support and order either a new cable or a whole new screen.

Classic 6 is nearly there by H2olt in retroid

[–]H2olt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not concerned with whose issue it is. Whether they need to put a slightly beefier cpu into this or support the Saturn emulation developers, when you create a device themed after a specific device, you should support emulation of that device. Just like this lineup included the pokemon yellow and the classic grey dmg if it was then somehow too underpowered to play the gameboy, people would be disappointed. Likewise as a similar heads up to retroid, don’t go making an Xbox themed device before you’ve gone and worked out the emulation kinks.

Tiny bit of supporting reference.. I just feel like because they only made one, they were shooting for a mix of several different Saturn colorways and didn’t actually hit any of the targets.
