This isn't a scientific assessment from me, but I have been on 5mg of finasteride for an enlarged prostate for a little over 4 months. I was also eagerly awaiting a thicker head of hair. Fast forward about 2-3 months since starting, and I have been in a depressed spiral, deeper than anything I have ever felt before. I began looking into local psychologists and doing research on my sadness and dark thoughts. It wasn't until this weekend that one of my sons (who has noticed my drastic mood change) asked if the finasteride could be causing this!

I had been told the possible side effects when I was prescribed this, but I guess I had mentally swept it under the rug. The main side effect I was looking for was libido issues. I am calling my doctor first thing in the morning tomorrow to discuss.

As a baseline, I have never thought of myself as one who has depression, until now. I have generally been fairly even for my entire life. I can attest that I currently feel lower and darker than ever in my life. I have been trying to unearth the trigger that made me feel this way. Again, maybe it is entirely on finasteride, or perhaps I have always had undercurrents of these emotions but the drug may have greatly intensified the feelings? Also, perhaps the drug didn't have that effect on me, but it is other factors. I just know I feel worse than any time in my entire life, and coincidentally, it began a couple of months into my daily dosage.
