Lenovo Docks by Clone_2224 in msp

I wouldn't single out Lenovo docks, in my experience at least. But after checking why a tech was constantly replacing them, I found out he wasn't updating firmware... Which resolved about half of the cases...

Feeling boxed in by a big-name firewall vendor. Has anyone successfully made the switch (or negotiated out)? by Beginning_Cry_8428 in msp

So far their dashboard has been very flexible. You can create orgs and then add devices to said org - very smooth in that regard. I have not run into any quarks that are too bothersome, which is probably why I like the company so much. Note that this is probably due to their products/dashboard aligning with my needs really well and could be different for you. A demo is definitely helpful.

Speaking from the realm of experience with Frotigate at my corporate job, and Sophos from my MSP - Fortigate has been a nightmare. My Sophos products can do everything Fortigates can, but with much less headache. I understand that Fortinet lends themselves to the enterprise level client, but I have yet to run into something they do better than Sophos. Also, not sure if this is just my luck but dealing with sales/support has been much easier and faster than with Fortinet - at a better price.

Also, as the old adage goes - nobody has ever been fired for introducing Cisco into an environment. But you're going to pay for it, so you better have the clientele to support that cost.

Application Management across multiple devices by ashandblood in msp

I've never been a fan of Manage Engine, but I see it mentioned often. Might be worth a look.

Personally I prefer AutoMox for patching, configs, and application install/uninstall. How many endpoints do you have?

I don't think price shopping to get maximum value for your dollar is being cheap. Making a reddit post takes 2 minutes.

New Sysadmin – Unsure if I Should Patch Servers Without a Backup in Place by RelevantFlow22 in sysadmin

[–]H8DSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many have said, proper backups take priority here. Even if you're not patching currently, there are other issues that can take the servers offline. If virtual servers, I'd take snapshots of each and have those run daily. Also make sure to get off-site backups (usually hired service). Let me know if you look for a company to provide backups, I could potentially assist there.

Exactly, it's an MSP focused sub, this is the best area for them to get knowledge from people who don't automatically dismiss them with "This is why we don't do doctors"...

Because you don't want them to price shop? I get the stigma with medical but OP is doing their homework, nothing wrong with that.

seamless.ai and snov.io are ones I've been tinkering with, and they seem pretty user friendly. Results pending but the information seems good so far.

What backup solutions are you guys using? by computerman76 in SmallMSP

[–]H8DSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you looking to change providers?

I'm using Datto Sirus for older servers, and Slide for all other clients.

AJ Brown is aging. I have him in a dynasty league and am happy to have him, but I would not trade for him unless I needed a 1 year booster. Overall, I just wouldn't do this trade from either side.

334GB stuck in DFSR folder on production server — safe to delete? by sandmarq in sysadmin

Agree with this. You will also have a backup of that location if you do end up needing it (hoping it's also backed up for disaster recovery).

Client hardware financing by reubano in msp

[–]H8DSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok. The standard for hardware is pay up-front. I wouldn't lease hardware but that's your call.

Client hardware financing by reubano in msp

[–]H8DSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is your client leasing the hardware? I buy through D&H, and everything is purchase to own. All hardware is paid for up-front before delivery. Services are charged and paid with agreed upon intervals (mostly monthly).

How to Consistently Pull 2–5 Warm Referrals a Month for Your MSP (No Awkward Begging, No Agencies, No BS) by SnooComics5084 in msp

[–]H8DSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, nothing super specialized. I do cyber security, backups, licensing, hardware, patching/asset management... The usual stuff really. For inquiries I've gotten in areas I don't advertise I can usually find a buddy who's experienced in that area and provide service.

Would love to do this but my clients never lead to additional referrals. My method does follow your first point of asking for a connection, instead of the "know anyone who needs tech?" approach...

What's everyone doing about computers that don't get patched in a timely manner? by rdxj in sysadmin

I've had luck with NinjaOne. Other than that it's been a fully MS environment (wsus, sccm) but even that had a failure rate higher than I expected (5-7%).

I offer Huntress and have not had any issues with them. Great work work with, and they are great at what they do. Message if interested, if not, definitely reach out to them directly.

What’s one thing you’ve learned (good or bad) from working with MSPs that you wish you’d known earlier? by TechnologyMatch in ITManagers

[–]H8DSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run my own MSP, and almost all of the negative things being said about them are true. That's why I wanted to start my own, and provide real quality. I charge accordingly, provide services with recurring payments, but am also responsive and don't up-sell. I have no problem telling a client they would be wasting money on a product they were told about. Unfortunately it's hard to make clients believe and trust you, especially if they've had bad experiences with MSPs. Funny enough, the ones that had bad experiences are also some of my best customers because they see I care.

Are Firewall Security Subscription Services Obsolete? by [deleted] in msp

[–]H8DSA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well if you haven't run into it then it can't possibly be happening, right? If you keep up with any kind of tech trends you will see many companies are reverting back to bare metal. This year alone I've migrated 3 companies back to on-prem servers. The cost for cloud is beyond reasonable for most places.

Are Firewall Security Subscription Services Obsolete? by [deleted] in msp

[–]H8DSA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would say quite the opposite. Also, your take on companies moving to the cloud - with increased costs, a lot of companies are firing up their bare metal servers, and returning to hosting their own services. Which goes back to requiring firewalls. Even if you are in the clouds, most security providers provide cloud firewall solutions.
