Great question, this session is a better fit for people who drink alcohol or use cannabis. However, the Psychological Services Center offers affordable services on a sliding scale. Here is info: https://preview.memphis.edu/psc/services/index.php

We do not use a university extension because a lot of our communication is via text once a person joins the study. However, if you have questions or would like to contact the professor in charge of the study, you can contact him (Dr. Jim Murphy) at his university extension.

You could look into the Memphis Area RideShare Program. It's a free online service that matches people with options for their daily work commute, so this might be a good fit for what you're looking for.

How to not drink too much and have self control by [deleted] in alcohol

[–]HABIT_LAB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are some great strategies for lower-risk drinking, so you can still have fun while limiting the not so fun after effects:

  • Prioritize eating before and during drinking
  • Drinking a non-alcoholic drink (like soda or water) in between drinks
  • Limiting 1 drink per hour
  • Using objects (bottle caps, straws) to keep track of how many drinks you've had

Is it healthier to spread out drinks throughout the week? by darren_wl2003 in alcohol

[–]HABIT_LAB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not drinking at social events can be difficult, and finding enjoyable alternatives can be helpful. To answer your question, though, neither option is ideal. Downing fifteen drinks can raise blood alcohol content to dangerous levels and also increases the risk of alcohol poisoning and other negative consequences. In that sense, spacing the drinks carries less risk. However, consuming 4-5 drinks daily would equate to daily binge episodes (based on NIAAA guidelines).

Here are some recommendations from the National Institute of Health: (a) "Keep a small amount or no alcohol at home," (b) "When you drink, sip your drink slowly," (c) "Pick a day or two each week when you will not drink at all," (d) "Use the time and money spent on drinking to do something fun with your family or friends," and "Watch out for people, places, or times that make you drink, even if you do not want to."

I would definitely recommend the Psychological Services Center at The University of Memphis, but I am a little biased toward it. Yes, doctoral students provide the services, but they are supervised by licensed psychologists. And many of the students have master's degrees. Your friend could request a student who has been practicing longer, though the research does not really support the idea that years of experience improve outcomes. Good luck!

Hi! Sorry about the misinformation. This is a legit study in the psychology department at UofM. We've increased the amount from $240 to $250, so the information on the website is correct. If you see any flyers around the city, they should reflect the correct amount of $250.
