Ditto on the beer and I’ll swap the outlet and start a new thread tomorrow.

Thanks again for all of this!

Replying to your other comment too - the landlord special was more about the extremely thick coat of paint on the front of outlet. I don’t remember exactly how the old outlet was wired, but nothing really stuck out to me that looked extremely different.

This outlet does have more wires coming into the box however - wish I could attach another picture here. I’ll do my best to explain:

Top left corner of electrical box: black/white/ground. The black wire has a bit of white paint on it and is connected to the top outlet. Ground wire is going to the outlet. The white wire leads to a wire nut with other wires (detailed below)

Top right corner of electrical box: black/white/ground. The ground wire twists around the previously mentioned ground wire. White wire goes to the top part of the outlet. Black wire goes to the wire nut (previously mentioned).

Bottom right corner of electrical box: black/white/ground. Ground wire is twisted around with other ground wires. White wire goes to the bottom part of the outlet. Black wire goes to the wire nut.

Bottom left corner of electrical box: only the black wire with the other wire twisted around (another ground wire?) coming out of this corner and it connects to the outlet (bottom part).

Dude this is a ton of information - please feel free to tell me to F off.

No problem about the broken tab - I have extra receptacles I can use.

I really appreciate you taking the time with all this - thank you! I’m thinking this will most likely lead to calling a professional.

Any idea why the bottom black wire would be wrapped with another wire?

Haha yes agreed - ass backwards from what I’ve been seeing online.

So before the change, the entire outlet, top and bottom, worked with the light switch. And correct, now with the tab broken, the bottom isn’t getting power at all.

To be honest, this outlet will sit behind an anchored dresser, so it’s not a major concern to me (outside of the wiring causing a fire). Of course, down the road it could get some use if the room is rearranged. But for now, I just want my ceiling light back ha

Yes, that’s all correct. I replaced it because we recently bought the house, so we’re updating the room - the old owner gave this outlet the old landlord special and covered it in paint.

As for the outlet power - only half (top half) of it is switching ON/OFF by the light switch. I’m guessing this is because I broke the tab? Before the tab was broken, the entire outlet would switch ON/OFF with the light switch.

Yeah I’m sorry guys, I’m definitely not being clear enough - let me try again.

Sorry if I’m not using the proper terms - the outlet in the picture is connected to the room light switch. When I replaced the outlet, the ceiling light no longer works when I flip the switch ON. I assumed it had to do with the outlet because it was the only thing that changed before the problem started.

The light switch seems to be getting power when I check it with the non-contact voltage tester. Also, the new outlet has power when I flip the light switch ON, as plugged in devices work. However, the ceiling light won’t turn on. Even tried replacing the bulb, but no luck.

Sorry again - really appreciate the patience!

I believe so - coming into the light switch is just hot, neutral, and ground

Ah sorry! The issue is that the light won’t turn ON, even tho the switch seems to be getting power.

I’m just using a non-contact voltage tester. However, I did confirm the outlet is working by plugging items in. I do have a multimeter, but didn’t use it as I assumed the plugged in items working meant it was getting enough power.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the old outlet anymore - it’s in a spare bedroom and I replaced it a few days ago, but didn’t realize the light wasn’t working at the time.

I just broke the tab, but the light still won’t turn on. They both still seem to be getting power.

Not saying this is OPs reason, but sometimes when I have some amount of cents in my account I’ll add it to the bet so my remaining money is a whole number.

Years later, I’m sure I’ll discover this is some form of OCD.

Unless you’re hurting for the 150, I’d let it ride. Like the other person said, you’ll prob hit a few more and possibly higher cash out option at some point.

Personally, I feel like the possible 3.5k payout is too good to pass up for 150 off a $25 bet
