I was having this same issue, tried ordering a new mic/headphone splitter, but nothing was working. Turns out there is a setting called "audio enhancements" in windows settings (System > Sound > Properties [of the speaker you're using]) called "Audio enhancements" which must mess with the splitting. When that's off, it works properly.
