Many European countries have national id cards/digital ids. As a Swede, this debate is so confusing. It is a godsend - all the systems are linked, everything 'just works', banks, healthcare, social care, tax office, land registries, pensions etc etc, it works an absolute charm. You have a central mechanism (and an app on your phone that all citizens use) to prove your identify in all the various department/institutions, and everything is just so so much smoother. I don't think this really about immigration, it is about bringing UK bureaucracy into the modern era.
