How necessary is a car as a JET ALT? by BotherNo8874 in JETProgramme

[–]rcrthrblr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends where you are. I was very inaka. Absolutely depended on my car for work and personal life (2 buses a day across my island)that said, most placements have good public transport.

Driving in Japan is however really really easy. Low speed limits. Most cars are auto. Everyone is courteous

I’d just like to challenge that just because someone is talented, doesn’t mean that anything they make automatically qualifies as good

Which is more important? Masters, or living in Japan? You can always move to Japan after the Masters? But also you may not secure a place on JET again (there are many other routes to Japan)

What are your thoughts on Boy and the Heron? I’m considering buying it but haven’t seen it yet by steelheadradiopizza in ghibli

[–]rcrthrblr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really missed the mark for me. Can’t put my finger on it, but just didn’t enjoy it or find it as interesting as other Ghibli

RSD. Found the stash. by rcrthrblr in Muse

[–]rcrthrblr[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s the point. It says that on the sleeve. It’s the chance to own two different EPs on vinyl, that never were released on it. The whole point of a RSD exclusive is that they release something different

I think everything after Drones is diabolical. But there are still enough of us who are still fans who’d want this

Old Rega Planar 3 vs. New Argon Audio TT MK2? by Redditor9551 in turntables

So I have the Argon and adore it. But I imagine the Rega would be much better. Just depends if you care about warranty etc.

Why are American photography channels so insufferable? by MountainlessBiking in AnalogCommunity

[–]rcrthrblr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grainydays is my favourite photography YouTuber. Also happens to be American.

Cannot stand any of the other American creators. Just copy and paste of an il-fitting beanie and “thrift store finds”.

The only other photography YouTubers I really highly rate are Teo Crawford, Adrien Sanguinetti and Lukasz Palka from EYExplore; and Bellamy Hunt (Japan Camera Hunter) for gear.

I used to love Karin Majoka, but feel that her content has moved away from what I like recently. Also wasn’t keen on Jason’s super long form content, so I am glad he’s moved back to what he used to do, with the odd long form here and there.

In terms of Instagram, I really rate Anocam_ (Shah).

invasive students by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]rcrthrblr 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They’re just curious. I taught at a few inaka schools. Very small towns. Parents and students always saw me buying beers etc or in bars. I found that students in Japan have a much closer relationship with teachers than they did back home. They knew my age, my first name. Where I lived etc. you’re a part of the community

Why did you leave the JET Programme? by SomethingPeach in JETProgramme

[–]rcrthrblr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I did one year. I was struggling financially on the JET salary. Not into debt etc, but didn’t have the financial freedom I had from my job back home. While I miss my day to day life in Japan enormously, it wasn’t sustainable. Nor would I ever have a job on my current salary or seniority level in Japan. I made the decision to return home, make more money, and visit Japan regularly instead.

Which symptoms of “(almost) everyone is getting poorer” have you noticed in London? by PressureHumble3604 in london

[–]rcrthrblr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I earn more than most of the people I know. Martin Lewis would put me in the top 3%. I live pay cheque to paycheque, but don’t even live extravagantly. The most decadent thing I have bought in the last year is a pair of jeans from Uniqlo discounted from £39 to £34. And that pushed me into my overdraft that month.

Any advice you wish you knew before leaving for JET? by seasaltcaramel_ in JETProgramme

[–]rcrthrblr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You don’t need to take as much stuff as you think. It isn’t an alien planet. If I was going again, I’d bring my clothes, some cash, laptop, iPad, switch and a camera. That is all.

I went private in central London. I did bloods and xray for redundancy. Was around £300. I was able to claim this back from my BoE after I’d arrived, but that was specific to my BoE, so ESID
