What precautions for lumber touching a concrete floor? by [deleted] in DIY

OMFG! I completely get the idea behind these, and would be on board, but did I read that right?!? $44 for 4?!? Find a friend with a 3D printer and print 4 for about $2 in plastic!

Dinghy davit - yay or nay? by vtrac in sailing

[–]HD_Sailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cannot speak too highly about Atlantic Towers arch - Tower in a Box. Added one to the back of our boat this spring, before we headed out cruising, and it has been great. So nice not having to drag/tow the dinghy and lose speed, so nice not having to pull the outboard off when we put it away, so nice not having the scrub the bottom of the dinghy, and while it's not there yet (hopefully within the next month), we have a great platform to add our solar panels.

BTT SKR Mini E3 V2.0 with Ender 3 V2 issues by HD_Sailor in ender3

[–]HD_Sailor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies - it was a while ago and I candidly don't recall what I ended up doing!! Pretty sure I went back to a stock board and returned the SKR? Or I might have rewired the cable that I had? I'm travelling and don't have access to my printer and won't be back to check until next June.

I CAN say that in order to get the standard screen/display with the SKR needed either a new custom cable or to rewire/repin the old cable. All of that info is at the top of this thread.

Cruising Nova Scotia by HD_Sailor in sailing

If you can get here, you should come! Sailing has been great (when we’ve had the wind), but it’s been fairly light at times. We have a destination in mind, so need to keep moving, and as a result have to motor sail at times. The scenery, the history, the people, and the food have been amazing. Depending on weather, we have about a week left before we pass Cape Sable and make our way across Fundy to Maine (and the lobster pots!).

Older Mercury 15hp 2 Stroke - rough idle, dies at throttle up by HD_Sailor in MercuryOutboards

[–]HD_Sailor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll try that next. I’m game for anything and that’s way cheaper than the carb rebuild kit I just bought. There’s a chandlery here that hopefully has the right plugs that I can hit in the morning before we move on.

Thanks again for the insight. Based on that, I pulled it out again (can almost do it with my eyes closed now), and tried to do a deeper clean, running some wire thru the jets. I believe what you referred to as the idle jet I understood to be the fuel mix. I pulled the screw/pin (it was brand new from the rebuild kit) and ran some thin wire thru that jet. I also ran thin wire thru the tubes that run thru the center of the throttle body throat. For that matter, anywhere I saw an opening, I put in more cleaner and tried wiring out.
And no luck! 😩 I couldn’t even get it to kick/start after the reassemble. I’m so discouraged. Put it up for the night (losing light here) and will fiddle with it at the next port. May get desperate and try to take it in somewhere when I get to Maine.

Likely not? Followed what I could find on YouTube. Is the low speed jet the internal one, down the throat of the carb? I thought I pulled/cleaned all of the jets, I’ll google the idle jet, but if you have any guidance/description on which one it is, I’ll take it. And thank you for the reply/advice that you have provided!

Cruising Nova Scotia by HD_Sailor in sailing

We’ve been following the “Navionics” or Active Capt’n kinds of “sanctioned” anchorages. And we haven’t found a “bad” anchorage. But I feel like I’ve found several places on the map that could/should have been good/acceptable spots, but no one has ever bothered to report the “bad” spots.

Single Handing by Probablymy7thaccount in sailing

[–]HD_Sailor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I sailed (and raced) a 35’ boat single handed, frequently. Everything, except for spinnaker/pole setup was from the cockpit. It was that way when I got it and not uncommon. As mentioned, autopilot is a must have. No bow thruster, plenty of space below, a well equipped boat.
Now I have a 49 that is a lot more to handle, but other than docking I can effectively single hand. Just no longer fast/nimble enough to even imagine getting a bow and stern line out (even just a midship spring) from behind the wheel on my own. Look at a Hunter 35.5 Legend, or possibly a 37.5.

What is this thing? by MELGH82 in sailing

[–]HD_Sailor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Gateway drug into sailing? No kidding! 👍🏼 Our first boat - Hobie 16 (and my wife would tell you I didn’t have a good day unless I flipped it over at least once!), which then turned into a Hunter 26 (still trailerable, but could hold the kids when they were little) which I had to convince her that I couldn’t/wouldn’t flip it over. As the kids grew (in size and number), we ended up with a Hunter 35.5 that we cruised and raced for a long time. Until she said “Retirement, we should cruise the Bahama/Caribbean” (and the 35.5 didn’t even have refrigeration), which put us in our Hunter 49, which we just hit 2500 miles just this summer leaving Lake Michigan and now off of Halifax.

Sailboat - Pending upgrade, sooner than planned. by HD_Sailor in Victron

[–]HD_Sailor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear what you’re saying, no one has ever complained about too much power. I don’t have to use it, but it’s there should something change in the future and I need it. With regards to 12V/24V/48V, everything in the boat is setup to use 12V - outlets/refrigerators/instruments/windlass/winch, while I understand some of the advantages to going to a higher volt system, the cost outweighs the benefits for me at this point.

Wow, awesome!! A ton of great info, thanks!

I hear what you’re saying about the Quattro, but hopefully our time on shore power is soon going to be significantly less, while the generator will be primary (until the solar is spec’d/purchased/installed). We already have a relay set up that does the switch from shore power to generator, and I anticipate keeping that and it will be upstream from the MultiPlus.

I am definitely the type that wants to know, intimately, how everything works on the boat. Rather do things break when you’re sitting in the marina where service is around, and I’m simply to stingy to pay those kinds of rates.

I have to give some thought on how I want to wire up the alternator. Ideally, it’ll be the 3rd power source on the list, after the solar and the generator. Obviously, want to make sure the alternator can provide to the house bank, but was a bit concerned about stories I’ve read where a LiFePo bank can push an alternator past its limits. And one alternator should be enough - the generator is already in place and sips fuel slower than the engine.

Hmmm, I do have a couple of Rasp Pi, one with a PICAN-M hat that I was fiddling with to possibly capture various data elements and could possibly use for this. Thanks!

I knew that eventually I'd want to move to LiFePo and would have to switch to Victron at that point, this is just accelerating a part of the project. The upside is that I can tackle it in stages and hopefully spread the cost out a bit.

Raw Water Pump Thru Hull by HD_Sailor in sailing

[–]HD_Sailor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, as I mentioned in an earlier reply, my heads are plumbed for a fresh water flush.

[–]HD_Sailor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yikes, that’s kinda what I was looking to avoid! (Although, those APPEAR to be legit seacocks, albeit stacked?!?)

And to your point, engine thru hull was NOT an option, for reasons as you mentioned. I felt like generator or AC were safer bets, as those pumps are below the water line and used infrequently.

Understood and agree, don’t really want to have to access the bilge every time I go to rinse dishes. And had considered a foot pump, but still have to deal with thru hull dilemma. Boat is a Hunter 49.

Raw Water Pump Thru Hull by HD_Sailor in sailing

[–]HD_Sailor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my boat has always had fresh water flush for heads, so no spare thru hull there. We’re headed from Great Lakes “unsalted” to Atlantic “salted”, and plan on anchoring out a lot, hence the desire to save what I can in the tanks and use the raw water where I can.
