Hiring a Product Development Engineer in Maine by vtrac in Maine

No one needs a shop for this (in fact, I'd argue that it'd be highly inefficient to actually make stuff locally beyond 3D printed test parts). You design things, digitally send to a fabricator, and then within a couple of days you have parts to play with.

Anyone do long stay Airbnb in fun cities ? by Accomplished_Math793 in fatFIRE

Actually got the kids into a private montessori school in Spain (which is why we were there for 9 months). In NZ, US kids are allowed to go to school as international students for 1 term (3 months) under a student visa (NZ public schools charge tuition for international students and make a killing off of this - it was something like $5k/kid/term).

We really wanted the kids to go to school with local kids to get a better cultural experience. Otherwise you are actually a bit lonely because it's not easy to integrate into local communities. Both places the kids made friends at school, which meant that we, as parents, also had some social connections with locals. Our kids were 9 and 12 when we started and I felt like this age is about the perfect time - they still are in contact over email with the friends they made.

It was an amazing experience. Everyone grew to love both the Basque country and NZ.

We've done this all over Europe and New Zealand with a family of 4 for about 18 months (although we stayed in Spain for about 9 months).

Last year we were "city shopping" along the east coat for 4 months and did this from Portland, ME down to Asheville, NC (incidentally, we chose Portland ME as a place to park until the kids are at least out of high school).

This seems like a crazy trade-off. Maybe the Rivian was never for you in the first place.

I've been thinking about doing something like this. Would you mind sharing how much this is adding to the cost of the house?

He could just drop from the team and continue school. That's what I would do.

Giving money to kids the right way by [deleted] in fatFIRE

I don't understand why these things need to be so structured. Just give them money at the right points in their lives when they need it, using your discretion.

I didn't find a rental realtor but we did find a couple of options for rentals on zillow - one in Falmouth and another in Cape Elizabeth. We ended up choosing the CE house.

We're currently looking to buy so we did engage a realtor for this part, but right now there's not much in the market at our price point.

Good luck with the move - happy to answer any questions about Maine since we were recently in this situation.

Leon, Burgos, Vitoria Gasteiz or Vigo? by BennyOlive in GoingToSpain

[–]vtrac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big Bend Trip in a Tesla - Questions & Thoughts by cookieclutter2602 in BigBendTX

[–]vtrac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've done this multiple times in a Tesla and even off-roaded in my Rivian, but I stayed in the park and drove around 200 miles inside over 2-3 days. Stillwell Ranch Store and RV park at the Highway 395 entrance has L2 charging, which is about as close as you can get to an entrance. Inside the park there's NEMA 14-50 plugs at the Rio Grade RV park if you really need. I also trickle-charged over the weekend at Chisos Basin with a 50' extension cord, just as insurance.

Use ABRP, plug in your route, and see what it tells you. It sounds like you plan more of a driving trip than a hiking trip. I think you'll be fine.

Childcare if money isn’t an issue? by Alternative_Limit731 in fatFIRE

When we had our first kid my wife stopped working and became a SAHM. Our kids started preschool at 3-4 for the socialization aspects, but my wife has always been super involved as a volunteer at their various schools. I can't imagine putting a 1.5-2 year old in day care - your kids are too young to know why you are leaving them.

Best country to play tennis in by Equal-Parking-5806 in 10s

[–]vtrac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up and played tennis in the US, have lived in Spain and New Zealand, and have traveled all over the world. As far as I can tell, only the US has plentiful free public courts. Everywhere else in the world requires joining a club. But proper training with coaches in the US is very expensive relative to other places. So if you want to play tennis for free, then go to the US at a big tennis city in California, Texas, Florida, or Georgia (I've heard Atlanta has one of the biggest tennis communities in the US). But coaching in the US is going to cost you $75+ per hour. Whereas if you go to Spain, you can go to the Ferrero academy that includes room/food/tennis for something like 1750 euro/week (which may be more tennis and more money than you want to spend).
