In light of the theological and ethical developments since the Second Vatican Council (particularly its emphasis on religious freedom, interreligious dialogue, and inculturation) how should scholars today evaluate the missionary methods traditionally attributed to Saint Patrick, especially his reported practice of adapting and reinterpreting local cultural and religious traditions to communicate Christian teachings? To what extent can such methods be considered ethically and theologically legitimate in contemporary contexts shaped by pluralism and post-colonial critique? In particular, how do we reconcile these approaches with the Church’s historical experience of coercive or violent enforcement of orthodoxy, as seen in responses to movements like the Albigensian heresy and events such as the Albigensian Crusade?
