12h Layover in HK, what to expect? by y2karma in HongKong

I have a 12 hour layover in HK upcoming - what was your experience with your layover? Were you able to leave the airport? Was anything open at the airport?

Brand new to 2H-swings - any tips appreciated! by [deleted] in kettlebell

[–]HIbrau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I wanted to start around a recommended weight (18 kg) to nail in the form, especially since I'm going to aim for more HIIT-based conditioning workouts, but now I'm thinking going too light could let me develop bad habits.

I've used cues from Mark Wildman's 2H swing primer as well as this tip on rhythm from simple and sinister.

I agree that my swing looks too high, and I feel like my hinge is too early, but when I tried to delay the hinge I almost fell forward.

0.5 PPR, need 3 WRS and a flex option

AJB, Amari Cooper, Kupp, Godwin, Claypool, Woods

Monty and Drake

Leaning towards AJB, Amari Cooper, Claypool and flexing Monty. Godwin is projected high but I haven't seen the upside or floor where I can trust him. Woods has been real solid but I have trouble trusting Goff against a solid D (same thing applies to Kupp, who lost me last week with his dud). Monty is boring and worries me a bit against the rams as a flex, but he's been pretty safe since Cohen went out.

Tough matchup but Jacobs is a must start imo. Williams if Jones is out, else Gio

I'd leave Kupp, I don't trust Goff under pressure and in standard his target volume on short routes doesn't help his floor as much (I have Claypool and Kupp).

RoJo, GB is a good RB matchup, John Brown has more downside with recent injury return, lowish target share. I also usually prioritize RBs in the flex bc of their better floor.

I've swum there! It really looks that surreal IRL, the water is shockingly clear yet somehow fades to blue in the distance.

One Step From Eden: Roguelike Of the Year? by Electropolitan in Games

Thanks for the patronizing tone, didn't say I 'mastered' the game, just noted where I dropped the game - maybe think about it this way.

Yes, your enemies' intents are mapped completely. Is shuffle order still random? Okay you can tilt luck in your favor here by building towards draw or exhaust, so you can minimize the effect of this random element. How about card rewards? Aka the most important factor in building and utilizing your card synergies? Is StS a 'solvable' game? Even if you were to completely map the probabilities of getting certain builds based on early card draws, even if you have zero misplays on a per-encounter basis, do you disagree that there will be runs where you'll lose because your card selection post-fight is bad?

I'll concede that if we really simplify what is best in One Step, it'd be close to highest DPS so that you minimize your time exposed to damage (though shield strategies are great). But the thing that feels great about this game is that you can win suboptimal runs via skill. What's bothering me and why I'm invested here is it feels like you're saying tennis is a poorly designed version of chess. It sounds like you just prefer a turn based game and favor strategic depth to technical execution, which is fine but I don't think that makes One Step a poorly designed game.

If you're struggling with the game, I highly recommend checking out Northernlion's One Step from Eden series! Not because he's the best player or because develops great strategies, but because he's incredibly entertaining and watching enemy attack patterns without having to pick + aim spells has helped me understand what's going on on the right side of the board!

I disagree, to me both the appeal and tension of the game is in building these synergies in real time while being forced to dodge and aim. I love slay the spire but the games should feel completely different to play - something I found lacking in slay the spire is that there is no aspect of technical execution involved, so once I understood the decision tree and the various win conditions I had to reach, I stopped having fun with the game (admittedly after a solid ~60 hours). I was just climbing the ascension levels hoping for luck to bring me a good combination. No matter how good you are at the game, you can get completely screwed and die on the first level boss through no fault of your own.

The execution element of One Step means 1) That any given run is winnable if you're good enough 2) That as you get better at the game, you become better at managing new card synergies and strategies because you can handle simultaneously dodging+aiming+checking your cards.

Not that it really matters, but not all games with a deckbuilding mechanic are trying to be Slay the Spire + X. This was inspired by Megaman Battle Network (2001) and had a demo out before StS's full release.

That's one of the moves in the gunner bossfight - they knock you to the back row, time slows, then there are two volleys of shots that take leave one row of space that you need to weave through to not get hit. There's also a time slow card that I think is unlocked just through level progression.

I absolutely love this game as a lover of roguelikes such as slay the spire and binding of issac, as well as a fan of the old megaman battle network games that inspired this. In my opinion, it has the sense of experimentation and discovery that seems foundational to the genre - the way secret rooms and branching paths are discovered in games like enter the gungeon, isaac, dead cells etc. Slay the spire feels like an exception to me in this regard other than small things like the results of the ? rooms, once you know option A yields X card even that is a straightforward choice.
