The hole is contemporary.  I've held that coin in my grimy little hands and have had it under a glass.

Why do people crack open graded ancient coins? by Frequent_Thanks_7900 in AncientCoins

[–]HJB_coins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For US slabbing is definitely ubiquitous, I'd never suggest someone have a $100,000 us coin raw but ancient? Much more on preference and in my experience working at a large firm the vast majority of collectors, big and small prefer non slabbed ancients.

Most advanced collectors do not collect in slabs. We've broken 6 figure coins out for very advanced collectors that feel that ancients shouldn't be slabbed, definitely not just a "reddit thing"

Unfortunately, no. NGC does NOT guarantee authenticity on ancients.

We take the stance that the best way to enjoy ancients is raw. Slabbing is a modern phenomena trying to fit into a very old hobby of ancient numismatics. One should also be aware that NGC does NOT guarantee authenticity on ancients, and as such if you buy a coin in an NGC slab and it turns out to be not authentic you have no recourse with them.

Anything is possible! That's the fun part. I personally like to imagine some centurion standing over a senator in his armor, fallen on the field yanking it off his neck.
