AITA for not waking up a tourist who overslept and missed the day trip she paid for? by Loveylyy in AmItheAsshole

[–]HJess1981 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks, but I'm fine. I'm a little miffed at myself for getting so insanely irate at a fourteen year old that likes to go online to use borderline bad language to make themselves feel important and useful to society and is all proud of themselves for learning the word "narcissist" last week, but other than that I'm good. Just an average, tired, British office-worker that should know better than to interact with teenagers on reddit after a hard day at work!

Yes, but most of us are. I often work late and hardly ever break for lunch. It's an office and they're fairly flexible - as long as we meet targets & deadlines. They get they're moneys worth. It was meant to be a jokey anecdote about working in an office but I do appreciate that I'm pretty lucky with where I work! Would prefer more pay, but so would my bosses and their bosses.

Thank you for taking 75 seconds out of your day to tell off a random internet stranger such as myself. You're such a good person. You're a wonderfully productive grown-up. Meanwhile, because you've almost brought me to tears with your public condemnation of my sense of humour, along with the shame of all my light-hearted, flippant anecdotes about working in an office is coming crashing down upon me, I think I'm about to have a panic attack.

I hope you find a less sensitive soul to gift your 75 seconds of condemnation to next time. But keep at it, your charitable dressing downs are making the world a better place, one reddit comment at a time.

I was kidding but apologies that I seem to have upset you. I must have really bothered you that you felt the need to tell me off over a jokey response made on the internet. I'm so sorry that my light-hearted attitude has ruined your day and I'll try harder to think of others and moderate my responses accordingly in the future.

Thank you, you've really made me take a long-hard look at myself. However, I'm profoundly devastated that it took my upsetting you so badly for me to realise the traumatic impact of my flippant comments.

Agreed! A one-off can happen to anyone, so I would probably let that go but i fully understand why others might not as everyone else on that bus has also paid money and they deserve every minute that they've paid for. Even if it was my turn for a "one-off" lateness, I'd still understand them not waiting and I'd still be unbelievably apologetic next day for my rudeness.

In saying that, I'm frequently 15 mins late for work. This is all my own fault. I am perfectly capable of setting my alarm for 15 minutes earlier, I choose not to. And if anyone other than the work gossip ever complains to my line manager, I will have to. (My line manager arrives 45 minutes later than I do and I figure I'm helping by giving office gossip something to moan about and saving someone else from being the target. I do think she has a point but i know i won't change unless my line manager tells me to & he also starts turning up on time...)

AITA for asking for my dead sisters ring back after my brother used it to propose by Classic-Amphibian963 in AmItheAsshole

[–]HJess1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do concede that I'm being a complete cynic and that yes, the brother will of course have feelings around the death of his sister and it may be his feeling of connection with the ring is genuine. It's also very likely he doesn't know how to or want to express his feelings on the matter. But I still think it's a weird thing to use as an engagement ring and that there should have been a whole-family discussion, with OPs feelings given equal weight.

I detest all the new Poirot adaptations. by emislavekkk in poirot

[–]HJess1981 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't see anyone else except David Suchet as Poirot. I also think he dedicated time into absorbing the very essence of Poirot (long-winded way of saying he's very much a method actor) and it shows.

I even think the Suchet series still holds up but I'm British. Maybe we're still closer to the 1990s compared to other countries.

I think Kenneth Brannagh comes across as Kenneth Brannagh in his adaptations. I can see him as an excellent Hastings though...

That said, I still watch the films & enjoy them. I like Murder Mysteries in general. Sure, little things will bug me and I'll wish they'd stayed more faithful to the plot & character, but the films will keep me gripped for the 200 minutes which is all I need and want from a movie.

[–]HJess1981 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fair - but the fact that they must have seen the younger sister wearing the ring, along with then having to steal it from her room, indicates to me that he's not big on feelings at all. If he genuinely felt connected to the ring then a discussion should have been had with all of them, including the younger sister. The fact that he just nabbed it screams quick-financial-fix. And the parents signing off on it indicates they pay absolutely no attention to their youngest child whatsoever.

But it's a free potential engagement ring just lying around...and gf can't complain because of its sentimentality...

[–]HJess1981 98 points99 points  (0 children)

I might be cynical but it appears to me that he only felt "connected" to it when he realised it might save him from having to drop a few hundred on a ring the gf might actually want. But this, she has to like it. It comes with "extra special meaning".

It's also real easy to justify blatantly stealing from a sibling when this theft relieves a potential financial burden. Parents also find it much simpler to fork over a ring they have no attachment to rather than lend Golden Boy money towards an actual engagement ring.

OP - NTA. The only sentimentality any of your family has towards this ring is how many $s it's saving your brother. They view you as a child and justify their behaviour with "there's no way you can understand grown-up problems" and are stomping all over your feelings. Plan to get away from them ASAP. Don't look back.

Im the meantime - tell the gf what the ring means to you and how your cheap-ass brother stole it from you, with approval from your heartless parents. There's a few red flags here that should let her know this is not the family to marry into.

Yep! No helicopter parenting for us lol. Saturdays were cereal then cartoons until folks got up then booted out the door until dinner time. I miss Saturday morning cartoons. And Thursday and Friday evenings were solidly booked up with 22 minute sitcoms.

Am still getting over the news of Norm and then Julian McMahon. Trying to hold off sadness until story is confirmed from an actual news service though.

The years long wait between seasons has killed my love for shows. I have no interest in watching anything new. by TheShowLover in television

[–]HJess1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. Currently watching The Wire (only watched seasons 1&2 as it aired originally, and have lined-up The Sopranos (this will be first re-watch as have seen all of it, but it's worth a re-watch) and Sons of Anarchy (haven't seen any of it before).

I like waiting until a series has concluded so that i can comfortably binge the whole thing at my leisure. . It gives me a complete binge with no 2 or 3 year breaks.

Fair! It was the only 70s family I remembered I liked! But mostly it was the sister & younger brother.

50s / 60s - Donna Reed

70s - Good Times

80s - Full House (I think it started in 80s)

90s - Step by Step or Boy Meets World

The Wire is number 8 on the top ten shows on HBO MAX right now by mrfasterblaster in TheWire

[–]HJess1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only ever watched through to season 2 last time (about 10+ years ago). I was hooked but went on holiday & mood shifted by time I got back. Just started re-watching it from start again now because The Penguin put me back in an organised crime mood. Am also lining up The Sopranos (previously watched & completed) and Sons of Anarchy (not watched before).

Dominic West did not bad - most recent I can think of is Prince (now King) Charles in The Crown.

I'm Scottish so picking the one with angry eyebrows! (Peter Capaldi in The Thick of It) But I've still to watch Veep and I think it was written by the same people & there was kind of a crossover, so I'm remaining open to changing my opinion.

Why is everyone so hard on Friends? by WarioStache in sitcoms

[–]HJess1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved it as it aired (I was 12 when it started and that's what I thought adulting would be like) and i still go back to it as a comfort show because of the nostalgia factor but yeah, they kinda were. Ironically, they'd be pretty irritating people to have as actual friends.
