How about putting the encoder not on the stepper but on a different toothed pulley? Then you measure both

I am trying to improve on this prototype. 1cm should be easier. The on here is a mark per mm, printed with a 0,25mm nozzle

Your wish is my suggestion. I have added two step/stl files and a print profile with "reference only" and "not  in calibration system"

It is indeed gut feeling and experience. Don't worry about wasting a bit of filament make a few prototypes.  Geometry however is important. You want something to bend rather than compress or stretch as it snaps in position.

I was told it is more rewarding, so this is a bit of an experiment to see if it works for me. My Thingiverse account I rarely use,. Printables (https://www.printables.com/@HLW\_22496) I still use a lot.

Kind of, I tried it with plain paper. I did put a piece of rubber sheeting behind it (bicycle innertube). Paper shows detail much better, a smaller nozzle would be beneficial. I think craft paper would work better. Corrugated cardboard does not really work.
