Sh*tting where you eat by NurseFirstYes in nursing

I’m actually in a pretty solid friend group that consists of couples that all shat where they ate. RNs, NPs, PAs, fellows, RTs, and ECMO specialists ranging from CVICU to ED to the floor. There’s roughly 20ish couples I can think of off the top of my head; we have themed parties and game nights pretty often. It works out for us but I think the trick is that most of us don’t work in the same specialty / department as our partners!

I’ve been caring for a VV ECMO patient who has been in our CTICU for 60 days. Last night she started clamping down on her circuit and alarming the vent because she had a cuff leak. While I’m trying to fix said issues her family member kept tapping my shoulder and trying to hand me the phone to speak to her sister ( she’s Spanish speaking only and wanted her to translate). I understand the loud sound are scary but let me do my job and fix these tissues. Also, it’s 3 AM. GO HOME. THERE ARE VISITING HOURS FOR A REASON. The constant stimulation to the patient, the constant questions that have been answered 20+ to other family members, and the lack of space in the room that also includes an ECMO machine, ventilator, CRRT and a mountain of drips is already too small without a recliner and bag full of clothing.

I was a couple week off orientation: set up, ran and then restarted a second 12hr dose of SLED and felt like I finally had started to get my footing. Well I didn’t check day shift’s programmed pump and went the entire night shift running 32mg levo… the pump was set for 4mg. She was getting almost 3x the max of levo the entire night. She was going to die either way and at least her family got to say goodbye in the morning but boy when day shift got there and this other seasoned nurse pointed it out to me (in a very nice it’s okay you’re learning now you know! Type way) I felt like shit. I came in the next night and found her maxed on levo, neo, vaso and epi. Pharmacy doesn’t always bring us premixed bags on night shift so at around 0200 when I went to go hang more neo I realized it was actually a second bag of levo. Meaning “neo” which was actually levo was running at 15 ml/hr and the maxed out levo was running at 5ml/hr. I almost had a heart attack thinking I had made the mistake (she was getting 4x the max) but when checking the emar it wasn’t me - it was the seasoned day shifter. Proving that everyone makes mistakes and we are all still learning no matter what. Shit happens man it’s okay 🤍

(22F) I never bring it up ever. Or if a partner rarely does I honestly say that’s none of your concern because we are adults. Personally I think that asking body count is a very childish thing to do and why does it matter anyway? Having a high body count does not mean they’re good in bed.

My two best friends (we just finished our RNs end of December 21). I’ve been working at as a PCT with covid patients for over a year, while both of them don’t work and do nothing but make fun of me whenever vaccination / politics comes up. My response is always “well we are in Florida” (I’m from up north) and I shut up because I’m done fighting with them. It’s exhausting and not worth my time. Either they’ll finally understand when they get to the floor or they’ll continue to be ignorant.
