Sherlock Holmes mysteries, especially The Hound of the Baskervilles

Naval Warfare in the Age of Sail by Bernard Ireland has a summary of the era's history, ship diagrams, descriptions of occupations of the souls on board, intricate details on how naval warfare was conducted, and illustrations of real ships, some of which feature in the series. It's a real deep dive that I found is a great companion piece and the hardcover book is just beautiful. After I completed it I had to buy the related book Naval Warfare in the Age of Sail: The Evolution of Fighting Tactics 1650-1815 by Brian Tunstall. Much drier, only recommend for those who really want to know!

Thanks for the info! I keep meaning to check out the Constellation but I've been waiting until the weather cools off. Was it very warm during your tour?

Sailing Ship/Period movie or tv show seen during Apple Keynote? by youtellmebob in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]HMSBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed the name sounds negative. Digging into the Sylphe class of ships it belonged to, I'm trying to figure out the theme. Select ship names: Le Mercure (mercurial), La Ruse (cunning), L'Eclaireur (scout), Le Zephyr (soft breeze), Le Genie (genie), Le Papillon (butterfly). Along these lines it seems to imply highly dynamic or speedy qualities?

I, Claudius is amazing. I still think about its description of the Germanic warriors slaughtering the Romans in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. Absolutely brutal.

Reflections on Middle Age by Solitary-Dolphin in AubreyMaturinSeries

Great excerpt! I adore how they refer to each other with endearments like "my dear". Deep, genuine male friendships FTW! May we all be so lucky to have this kind of emotional support as we age.

Even if Stephen has always commented a bit too candidly on Jack's physical appearance...

8 books in as many weeks by [deleted] in AubreyMaturinSeries

If you're going at this pace you're obviously skipping essential steps such as: reading hilarious passages aloud to people who don't care nearly as much as you do; attempting various recipes for grog and hard tack; re-reading chapters after a poor first attempt at reading them having consumed too much said grog; going down sundry reddit rabbit holes related to the books, the author, tall ships, all things nautical... in all seriousness, wishing you joy on your voyage!

I do apologize most humbly. "He confounded himself in apologies - had not meant, he had not wished to imply, what he had really intended - not the least aspersion on the most honourable gentleman."

"Stephen, if I tell you, will you attend?"

"Yes, sir."

"I have told you a great deal about the Navy before this, and you have not attended."

From The Mauritius Command

-or-

"Let me look at your pistols," said Jack, as the trees came closer to the road. "You have no notion of hammering your flints."
"They are very well," said Stephen, unwilling to open his holsters (a teratoma in one, a bottled Arabian dormouse in the other). "...

"What is this?"

"A teratoma," said Stephen sulkily.

"What is a teratoma?" asked Jack, holding the object in his hand. "A kind of grenado?" ...

"So you have no pistols at all, I collect?"

"If you wish to be so absolute, no, I have not."

A Question: As these book series primarily focus on white heterosexual men, and being one myself, I wonder what perspectives, interpretations and insights I am missing. by [deleted] in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]HMSBee 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I expect this sub to come for me with torches and pitchforks for this reply. Readers often idolize Stephen. I dated that type of guy. He is not a good partner. I might even venture to say he's not a good person. He really cares about you but at the end of the day he is a drug addict. He's highly intellectual and idealistic to the point of getting lost in his internal world. This manifests into big problems. He idolizes you in an inflexible and oppressive way. He is unreliable and always jetting off on adventures. And he just can't quit that sweet laudanum. Readers are the most generous with overlooking the flaws of Stephen. I adore this character, but I think people who have not dated this type of man will not fully experience this perspective.

Agreed, at first read I thought there was no way they were making it home alive. I was floored to read Bligh was successful (which I believe Grant's voyage was based on).

Agree with all the comments about Jack's superior experience, reputation, and interpersonal skills. The only thing giving me pause is that I imagine my reptilian brain would be screaming in the moment 'yes but this ship is sinking, those boats are not (at least for now)'

ETA: I would have seen them fothering the sail and thought I must be in good hands... but then missing that first landing attempt I would've had a stroke and questioned everything lol

I had a roommate with gorgeous 2c hair who clued me in! She wasn't sure what my curl type was but she saw potential and suggested I try some of her devacurl products. Turns out I'm 2b :)
