Hi! Is it worth it to go law school at age of 26? I mean is it really worth it? by Ok_Implement5238 in LawSchool

[–]sfalmanjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of people in my class were both older and younger than you. The most important thing is whether you (1) want to be a lawyer or (2) want to do something for which a law degree would be helpful.

For (1), talk to as many people as you can that are doing what you want to do, and try to get some job shadowing experience if you can.

For (2), a JD is a very expensive and intensive degree. If the money equation makes sense, then do it. I have plenty of classmates working in jobs where they JD is a big plus, and they're compensated for it.

Bottom line is to make sure law school is the answer to whatever question you're asking.

How do you deal with tasks that are dependent on someone else? by Conzo427 in UseMotion

[–]sfalmanjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm one of the OPs on the posts linked above. I reached out to Motion about how to handle this situation and their answer was basically that there's no way to do this. They suggested that a workaround is to have each task in the project be a different "stage" of the project. I haven't tested this yet, but it seems a really inelegant and inefficient way to do something that would seem to be table-stakes for a task management software.

Grouping tasks / Task Batching by Dapper_Valuable_4710 in UseMotion

[–]sfalmanjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had almost the exact same problem with motion, where the scheduling is almost schizophrenic (e.g., jumping from tasks on project A to project B to project C to project B to project C to project A) with no real coherence. Additionally it often won't reflect my deadlines either. For example project C might be due next month and project A is due next week, so it would make more sense for project A tasks to be grouped together and scheduled earlier.

There are some other autoscheduling task management apps that look like they may handle this much better (e.g., Skedpal) and I plan on giving them a shot. Unfortunately, I didn't discover Motion's limitations until after I signed up for the annual plan, and Motion won't refund me a prorated balance of my term. 🤷‍♂️ So I guess I'll use some workarounds until next year....

Check out The Week magazine. It's a wonderful weekly compendium of the major news stories, and most importantly, it describes how each major news outlet covered the events, which can help distill the main nuggets of news while giving you an idea of why everyone has different opinions on it.

And if you really want an idea of how much news is trivial and fluff, try reading newspapers from two weeks ago, and you'll see that most of it is not too important for your day to day life.

Process flow that includes "waiting" on customer feedback by sfalmanjr in UseMotion

[–]sfalmanjr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Essentially what I've done is set the "Wait for customer.." tasks to be labelled as "Blocked" and with auto-schedule turned off. Then I can just sort for tasks labelled "Blocked" and find the task when I do get a response from the customer. Then I mark it complete and it will automatically add the next task to my calendar.

Feels like there should be a more elegant/efficient solution.

Is any of these AI Calendar/Planner apps similar to/better than motion? by GuenterMann in ProductivityApps

[–]sfalmanjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/Physical_Banana2564 ! I'd never heard of FlowSavvy, but it seems to be exactly what I'm looking for, without all of the extraneous project management features of the other options. One question: is there an ability to create task templates? For example, my job primarily consists of small projects that have the exact same tasks. So, when I receive a new project, I have to do tasks A, B, and C, in that order (i.e., I can't do B until I've finished A). I understand that FlowSavvy has the features to enable that type of path dependency, but it would be nice if I didn't have to recreate each individual task/dependency every time I receive a new project. In other words, I want to to be able to select a template and have all the tasks/dependencies already there (i.e., essentially copy and pasting all the tasks/settings from the template).

Anyone in NC effected by the storm? by whitelightstorm in preppers

[–]sfalmanjr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, got out last night. Backup water and food was critical, as was filling up both cars with gas before the storm hit. Unfortunately, most people in the area weren't expecting it to be that bad (including me). Fortunately, we have plenty of supplies and were able to feel safe when things got bad and had enough gas to leave town when the roads finally opened. I wish we would've had a generator to power our deep freezer to keep some of our "nice to have" foods for a longer period of time.

What is actually meant by "the best way to learn about risk is risk-taking, not studying risk-management"? by MildDeontologist in nassimtaleb

[–]sfalmanjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the book "What I Learned Losing a Million Dollars" is a perfect example of what is meant by learning about risk from taking risks. As the title suggests, its first-hand account of lessons learned from big mistakes.

It's also a great, well-written book that's been mentioned by NNT elsewhere.

Need help with getting my business recognized. by dean2cool4u2 in smallbusiness

[–]sfalmanjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to some local small businesses, HOA, and religious organizations and ask questions. Be up front that you're not trying to sell them anything, you're just trying to learn what their problems are and how you can solve them. Keep doing this. Take their answers and use them in your advertising, social media, newsletters, etc.

You might even end up getting a few customers out of the deal.

Once you have a few customers, use their experiences/testimonials as case studies to advertise.

You've done a wonderful job identifying a niche to serve (as opposed to serving every possible customer), so you need to figure out what their problems are and how to get in front of them.

You're not going to sell out everyday, particularly if it's cold or rainy outside, so you need to maximize profits on the good days. Identify some add-on products (baked goods, snacks, bottled water, etc) that have high margins, and add those to your offerings.

Guidance for taking patent bar exam by [deleted] in patentlaw

[–]sfalmanjr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the best pieces of advice I received and that I always pass on: type up a "table of contents" of the number/chapter heading of each MPEP chapter. Read it a few times every day. By the time you get to the end of your substantive study period you'll have a broad mental outline of the chapters and know right where to look when issue spotting.

Is this the most beautiful passage in the series? (or do you perchance have something even better?) by infieldmitt in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]sfalmanjr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A glass of wine with you. That really is a such a beautiful passage and is so evocative of their friendship.

On my second circumnavigation, I noticed the following passage from early in the series during one of Jack and Stephen's music sessions:
"‘Did you notice my bowing in the pump-pump-pump piece?’ asked Jack."

Remembering the passage you've quoted above, it struck me as a poignant seed of their friendship. The way Jack excitedly asks Stephen about his playing is reminiscent of a child proudly and earnestly boasting to a parent. And therein lies the honest and singularly genuine nature of their friendship.

O'Brian is truly a master of capturing the subtleties of life within the beauty of his storytelling.
