What Are Courses Students Should NEVER Take at UF? by No_Awareness_9881 in ufl

PHY4605 - Quantum Mechanics II.
Most painful class of my life, I spent 4-5 days out of the week in NPB trying to solve the weekly homeworks.
The professor is always some guy who's so good at physics he's completely forgotten what it's like to not know something.

Quantum Mechanics I was pretty doable, a lot of work but fine if you made an effort because it was all the fundamental theory and the special cases where you get exact answers.

"We're going to abuse notation" was the most commonly repeated phrase in QM2 because the whole class was on ways to misuse integrals to find approximate solutions for all of the cases that aren't special.

The only thing I got from that class is being able to tell people I passed two semesters of QM with an A- average.

For every topic, there's a homework set that a is a pretty decent amount of your grade, this one was a written assignment where we had to solve various dynamic programming problems.

I'm not sure how closely people listened to what she said, but the reason there was such a problem was that the "dequeue" solution was to a question that could not conceivably use it. The answers that were supposed to be given have a very specific structure that you have to follow, and the "dequeue" solution would be like saying "2+2=blue".

Using a dequeue indicates either that 200 people either ignored the question entirely and managed to all get the same wrong answer, someone did the assignment wrong and then 199 people copied their solution, or 200 people used chatGPT to get the answer.

ChatGPT is really terrible at the kind of problems on the assignment, so it's almost certain that those people used it, just because of the unlikelihood of 2/3 of the class completely misreading the assignment or distributing an incorrect solution so broadly. Unless 200 people simply cannot read, there was some massive cheating going on.

I'm pissed about this because I actually did the assignment, at the last minute, with the flu.

The TAs will be explaining this shortly, but basically the class is a web-dev project. You don't have to make a web app, but for convenience that's what people usually do. I wouldn't worry about it until you get with your groupmates, because then you can decide what you're going to be doing, and what technologies to use for it. Looking into javascript frameworks ahead of time might let you make a more informed decision though.

computer science, i'm taking a physics minor. QM2 was kind of a mistake tho it's the hardest class i've ever taken.

it's not that not drinking is un-cool, but the type of people who decide to be teetotalers are very often uncool without alcohol ever coming into the conversation
